Applying for Visa and Residence permit simultaneously

Hello all,

I am a student from India and I have been offered a PhD position in Aalto university, Helsinki. I have to apply for a residence permit now and am facing a problem regarding the same. My coursework starts in the first week of September. However, I received my offer letter a few days back and the Finnish embassy webpage says that the time required for processing the residence permit is 2 months. But, the time taken for processing a Visa is only 15 days. Can I apply for both a Visa and a residence permit simultaneously and travel to Finland by the end of August, while waiting for the residence permit to arrive in the next couple of months and collect it in Finland itself?

You will not be able to collect the permit in Finland:

To make a truthful visa application you would have to state that you are planning to stay in Finland longer than the 90 days and the visa would be denied. I suggest forgetting about the visa plan and just waiting for the residence permit. They do prioritize student applications because they know things start in the fall (although I am not sure if you are applying for a work based permit).

Also, contract Aalto in advance if in late August you start running out of time. I think they try to understanding, if the problem isn't your fault.

You can contact your Superviser and tell her/ him to give you a letter (addressing Migri) requesting to speed-up the process. I think it may help..

In addition, if you make online application you will get the decision more faster.
