True. But what pays of branding and advertising?
The corporation prices that in - and it's all what they 'want' - please remember the marginal cost of selling the 'next' pair of Jeans! -
and also never forget that they do not GIVE anything away! If a particular operation becomes unprofitable - or there are other reasons - they stop. The AZ selling went on for a long time - and if there were any radical losses on anything, it would go off the 'free shipping' list.
I really don't think it was losses which stopped the shipping - it was that there wasn't enough business to bother. Even now they don't seem terribly interested in the non-UK business as the new shipping costs are WAY OVER any true cost.

Has anyone experienced AliExpress.com? Seems to be an excellent alternative for Amazon.UK, as it offers free shipping, though the delivery times are much higher.

Stocks wares within EU customs area? If not, calculate VAT on top of the prices and possible customs fees too.

Most of the nicknacks and other Amazonian items are really sub 30 EUR in a lot of the cases, and even sub 20 EUR in most cases. I've actually used those sites (dXChina, eBay from China, AliExpress, etc.) to get small stuff (Aquarium heater, some wine making stuff..) and never had issues.
One time, though, I paid 9 EUR in fees to Tulli on a rifle scope from the United States.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

The problem with Amazon's supersaver was the ~25€ limit. For smaller things the ebay has been and still is better. I've tested dhgate just for !"#¤% and giggles as they had account in nordea and you could pay with net banking.

With the WIDE range of products that AZ had - and the really great prices - it was UNfortunately too easy to get to the 25£
