This is getting quite off the topic now, but.....

The first white/European settlers arrived in South Africa in 1652! It is surprising that after almost 400 years, westerners living in South Africa are not seen as true South Africans. As atas commented, with that thinking, that would make all whites living in America not true Americans. The Dutch settlers in South Africa (present-day "Afrikaans") established their own new language and culture in Africa; a whole new identity. Yes, that heart surgeon may have studied (partly) in America. But in fact he obtained his Master's in South Africa before that and then returned to South Africa. How on earth does that make him suddenly "American" and not "South African"?

I do know that most of black population in south africa are recent immigrants when you compare them to whites but politics say "white oppressor" so i go with that.

Noone will believe me, but I've worked in 4 different healthcare systems, and the best one, hands down, was Slovenia. Fast, efficient system, extremely well trained doctors, particularly consultants. Absolutely no out of pocket expenses, you can even get a prescription for paracetamol...... 5 rounds of IVF free, there is an online waiting list which anyone can check so you can make sure the employees of hospitals etc. are not shunting granny to the head of the queue.

Pay there is baaaaad though, and taxes brutal.

Interesting. How is it financed, do you know? Via taxes like in Finland?

While it may have little practical use it interests me how medical systems are financed. There are different models, like the tax model, insurance model, mixtures.

It took half a decade to get a diagnosis for my auto immune illness in Finland, but that's because I'm WAY younger than most afflicted by it. Sooo in that time it went systemic but oh well, at least I have a name for it now and am in line to see a specialist.

I have lots of friends in USA who have no insurance and pay everything out of pocket. I am thankful for public healthcare since it's the only one I have and hey, it's something. Plus I got in the same day to have my hemorrhoids looked at and had an acoscope up my butt in the frame of 30 minutes lol...that'd of taken longer in the States I'm sure (or the backwaters where I grew up).

So I'm thankful it's something at least.

I am sorry that I have to change my opinion about the healthcare system, I don't say it's useless but I am not happy/satisfied with it anymore especially after paying these hefty taxes.

Here is the experience which has forced me to change my "too positive' opinion about it. Till now I never needed any special treatment other than some routine visits for small issues and in my previous employment I also had a good health insurance. But 6 months ago I had a more serious problem, visited a doctor (25-26 years old), he prescribed some medicines and they didn't help much. Had another (second) visit,this time more experienced but not a specialist, and he said he would refer me to a specialist to have a check up. I was happy that system was working well and now I would have a specialist, waiting for some time was never difficult to understand. But, lo and behold, today, after 5-6 weeks of waiting I receive a letter where I am told to come for an operation in December. No discussion with any doctor about any operation, no check up by any specialist and they have booked time for me for an operation. Really? WTF? I know operation is the solution of last resort in my problem but without any check ups by any specialist and without any laboratory tests? And this how they are treating a person who pays more than 30% tax and is likely to pay for another 30-35 years if he stays fit and healthy
