Should I carry my air purifier to Finland ?

We are more concerned for our son who is dealing with severe breathing issues .

You'll need a humidifier then. Trust me. I don't have severe breathing issues, but when the RH% drops to teens, my nose starts to clog up. I wouldn't bother with the purifier because of mold, but I can see your need for it because of pollen and street dust.

I am not sure whether having both a humidifier and an air purifier is a good idea. I think for the time being the room air purifier which we are using will suffice .Another point of concern is I see in news that pollution is linked to autism .We were in LA when I gave birth to my first son who is autistic . Apparently LA is the most polluted place in the US and sometimes I start connecting the dots and thinking pollution would have contributed to my son being autistic because neither mine or my husband's family have any history of autism .So it was very unsettling for us . Now I'm pregnant with our second child and I just want to make doubly sure we are taking all the necessary precautions. I already have like four air purifiers in our home . One for each room . I know I might sound OCDish or paranoid but I just cannot stop this constant worry and questions which flood my mind at times ....

Less humidity, dryer all the stuff is. Dry stuff makes more dust. So I can't understand why it wouldn't be in your interest to keep decent humidity indoors. If you don't want to use two machines, get one that does both: http://www.allergia-apu.fi/store/ilmanp ... p-176.html

Air purity and air humidity are really two different things. Sounds like you should be using air purifiers (filtering the air) and not worrying about the humidity of the air.

We are all aware of that. But air purifiers are nearly unknown in Finland, as opposed to humidiers.

And worrying about humidity in the air is wise as well, as in many cases people who have breathing issues benefit from more humid air.

From what I read online humidifiers add water into the air, but do not remove dust and smoke and if you don't clean them regularly there is high probability of mold growth on the humidifier. This air purifier which we are using was recommended by my son's GP to help alleviate his breathing issue. I was wondering whether something similar is available in Finland but I think the weather conditions are markedly different there the reason humidifiers seem like a more popular option but since both cost the same I feel why opt for a humidifier when an air purifier in itself can help maintain indoor air quality and has more functions when compared to a humidifier.

Yes that's precisely my point.

Initially I asked the question on this forum because I wanted to explore the alternative options available in Finland since I wasn't sure Clair air purifiers had shipping to Europe because I remember seeing a certificate on their website which mentioned they were official distributors in North America but when I called the customer care they said they ship to Europe as well.So at the moment I'm not looking out for options.I am going to carry one in our hand baggage and depending on the condition in our new home in Helsinki I'll place an online order if required.

You should never use humidier which does not use heat to vaporize the air, that is the point. Heating prevents issues with not mold but algae.

And I noted the possible need for humidier because people who have issues with breathing can find dry air aggravating it. When relative humidity in the air drops, it starts to suck moisture from surroundings. Including human bodies. Which can lead to sensitive people (allergy, asthma etc etc) getting symptoms. Regular people feel it as inconvenience, your kid might find it more even with purifier.

I'd say you need to do less cleaning with humidifier (which by definition add water to the air) than with air purifier. As Tiwaz said, you'll want to get humidifier that uses heat, not those ultrasonic ones. Bring your purifier with you and get the humidifier when you get here, if and when you need one.

That seems tedious, yes.

I've only used this one. Start to use it when weather drops below zero, clean it when retiring it for summer. Cleaning which takes couple of minutes, if there isn't large lime deposits.
