Finnish Folk Songs/Tunes

Post by Yinyue » Tue Jun 16, 2015 4:43 pm

Hello dear community,

since I am both a motivated Finnish learner and musician, I'd like to know if anybody of you knows some links to
internet pages where one can find Finnish folk songs or -tunes (e.g. folk dances, accordion or flute pieces etc.).
It would be great if there is either sheet music or there are MIDI files (or something similar).

I've already been looking, but could not find a comprehensive collection (for Irish tunes, e.g., there is thesession.com).

Or maybe you yourself know songs/tunes? Then I'd be thankful if you shared it here.

Thanks in advance! :-)

Last spring, I went to a singing course.....pre-basic level 8) Anyway, I got to know a thing or two about Finnish folk songs... Yksi ruusu on kasvanut laaksossa (youtube) and Niin minä neitonen sinulle laulan (youtube) being my favorites. Also, moskovan valot (youtube) is great. Anyway, you can search the 'nuotit' for Finnish folk songs using google....

the best way, however, to get them is to go to a library. 'Suomen kansallislaulut' book is a collection of old folk songs with sheet music.

PS this contains certain songs http://nuotti58.blogaaja.fi/ or http://laula58.blogaaja.fi/ (seems to contain same stuffs)
I don't know if these notes are for accordion or piano or guitar.. as I am virtually zero when it comes to music.

If you want sheet music and are in Finland, then you should head to Library.

Probably not exactly or at least not exclusively what you're looking for, but while you're at it, you might want to take a look at this multi-volume series of song books called Suuri toivelaulukirja, which has tried to keep tabs on the most loved popular songs in Finland:

http://www.suomalainen.com/webapp/wcs/s ... laulukirja

This page lists the table of contents (titles of the included songs) for each volume in the series:
http://www.f-kustannus.fi/suuri-toivela ... sluettelot

The series of books spans several decades. Each volume contains simple piano and sing-along arrangements of the included songs, and lyrics too, of course. Many folk songs are included in that lot and much of it is Finnish music, but it is not exclusively about folk songs or Finnish-originated compositions; there are many other popular songs as well (Christmas songs, songs from popular musicals, etc.) The older volumes (with the lowest ordinal number) are probably better in that folksy and traditional emphasis than the most recent ones.

If you visit a Finnish used books store (or see what is available online), you could also find old song books used in schools in the 1940s...1960s... those are also likely to contain many simple sing-along arrangements of traditional folk songs or other "traditional" music.

OMG they seem to have more sequels and special editions now than Back to the Future, Star Wars, and Star Trek combined.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

I didn't know that "nuotit" means folk songs, I always googled "suomen kansanloulu" or the like.

It's getting out of hands, isn't it?

Here's a treasure trove for the OP:
http://www.kulttuurisampo.fi/kulsa/coll ... at&lang=en

Keep digging through the various collections. Note that they not only have sheet music on those pages but MIDI renditions of the melodies as well. (See the URLs listed for each song in the "All properties" / "Kaikki ominaisuudet" section. You have to click the section heading to make the URLs visible.)
