Swedish citizen's NON-EU citizen wife Residence Permit

Hi Everyone,

I would appreciate if anyone can give me some idea about the following:

I am Sweish citizen will be moving to Finland for a new job. My wife is on a Residence Permit in Sweden. We have been living in Sweden since 1 and Half years and before that around 6 months in UK (EEA family member permit).

My question is, can we apply my Wife's residence permit if she is in Finland? What is the application procedure (going to Police station?)? How long is the processing time (approximately)?

I (non-Eu) also have been living at my husband's country (EU) for almost 2 years before we decided to move here. Well, he moved here first as I still have my job. Once he settled, I quit my job and joined him. Got my residency in about less than 2 months.

Because of the "Nordic rules" you wouldn't need any permit, you just come and register in the maistraatti as a "nordisk medborgare". However you will probably need to do the EU-registration to bring over the wife with "EU-rules", similar to the process thats in UK. As a non-eu with Swedish rp, she can come to Finland for the 3 months, so no problem with that, you get your registration, id-nummer and all that sorted and then you go to the police an apply for the "EU-card" for her.

What is stated above is true. As the OP is coming here ot work, the regular spouse of EU citizen should be easy enough, but if there would not work there is actually easier rules also for spouses of Nordic citizens

Thanks everyone for your replies. Now, I got one question then. Its been one and half year for her in Sweden. According to Swedish immigration rules, she should get permanent residence after two years on family ties.

My question is that, will this period count when we apply for residence permit in Finland or will she get directly permanent residence? Or it will start from zero (two years or so)?

It starts from zero and takes five years to get permanent residence:

It's actually faster to get citizenship. It's four years since most people qualify for the strong ties:

And a Swedish language test is OK to get the citizenship as Finland's officially bilingual. So not that much worry over the language requirement.
