Looking for "normal" pickles.

Post by JqlGirl » Sun Aug 09, 2015 8:27 pm

Hi all,
I moved to Finland from Canada at the end of April and since my arrival, I haven't been able to find the sort of pickles that I'm used to.
Most of the Finnish pickles I've tried are either too sweet or too salty, and none of them are quite sour enough. I've been quite surprised that with the variety of pickles on offer at most supermarkets, I haven't been able to locate the style I'm used to. What I'm looking for is just a standard North American (garlic) dill pickle, or something similar. (e.g. Bicks, Vlasic, etc.)
If anyone can recommend a brand or variety I should be looking for, or even somewhere I can get an import jar if I have to, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks.

Charlotte

do you mean pickled cucumbers?

there's many varieties in the supermarkets, and i'm sure you can find one that has not too much sugar (or none).

tip:
look at the ingredients.
they're often multilanguage, so english might be included, but swedish is always included and it doesn't take a degree in languages to guess what "socker" means.

i used to buy one of the cheaper varieties that are made in czech republic, don't remember the name.

i also recommend "suolakurkku", which is made with fermentation, and without vinegar. often with garlic. but salty they are, yes.

available in s-market & prisma, and maybe other shops.

...there's also a few russian & estonian shops around town selling their varieties.

I've had the same issue when first coming to Finland. I found a lot of types, Finnish, Russian, Swedish, etc. but nothing was the way I liked it. Either too sweet, or too soft. So I ended up buying pickling cucumber from the market square and pickling them myself. They turned out great!
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

"No sugar, lots of vinegar, crispy and not too much salt."

Crispy? What brand, please? All that I've tried hve been at best 'semi-mushy.' Lidl's pickles have been among the worst.
