Student allowances

Post by zirly » Wed Aug 19, 2015 2:00 pm

So I got accepted to the university's Master's programme, starting in September. Based on the information I got, I should be eligible for the student allowances, as I moved to Finland to be with my boyfriend, with whom we've lived together 1 year in my home country (EU) and 1 year in Finland. The thing is that since last year I've been registered as temporary - due to the student exchange. They told me to go to the Maistraatti when I get the acceptance letter from the university, so they could register me as permanent. What I'm wondering now is whether to register based on the acceptance letter or based on my relationship - family ties. We have the rent agreements, however I would need to have them translated first, so it seems easier to register based on studies. (But I know I would need the translated documents later anyways, when asking for SA as a foreigner). What I don't know, is whether I could get then the student allowances or not if the reason for permanent registration are studies. Thanks for answers.

While there is temporary and permanent status recorded in the population register that Maistraatti manages, the basis for immigration is not recorded there. What Kela wants to see is that your EU registration at the police station is done for other reasons than studies.

You will have a hard time getting student allowance if you use studies to register (see link above).

Thanks for answer, I checked the link, however when I first registered at the police station, it was based on studies (exchange student). I couldn't do it other way, as we weren't living together for 2 years yet when I first came to Finland.

The Kela attachment for foreigners applying for student benefits (OT 10) asks for your current reason of stay. There you will answer family. I am not sure if the police registration certificate can be updated if the reason changes.
