private phone number

Post by heretostay » Mon Mar 05, 2018 6:34 am

I am getting a lot of sales calls and my friend said that she was too until her ex went online and set her phone number to private. I googled and could not find the answer on how to do it. Could someone here please help by pointing me in the right direction?

It depends on your mobile carrier. With DNA, you can go to https://minunpalveluni.dna.fi and set your number to private. With Elisa, you can do the same at https://verkkoasiointi.elisa.fi . If you're not able to do it online, call your mobile carrier's customer support and they'll sort it out for you.

Keep in mind that setting your number to private doesn't necessarily mean that you won't get these calls anymore. It just means that your phone is no longer publicly searchable. In some cases, it will decrease the volume of the calls you get, but it's not guaranteed.

What will work much better is asking the telemarketers from which company they are, writing it down, and then telling them something along the lines of "I'm requesting that you stop contacting me and to remove all of my information from your records". It's unlikely that they'll call again.

Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

i agree. I haven't heard companies cold calling people since forever. More likely heretostay has gotten number that is already on some telemarketers lists or has given it out in some online raffles.

You can also sign up for the "Robinson list" telephone preference service provided by the Data & Marketing Association of Finland. It's very efficient at preventing telemarketer calls.

The telephone preference service number is 0600 13404, open Mondays to Fridays from 8:00 to 18:00. Calling the service number costs 0,39€/minute on top of whatever your operator charges you for calling. The service itself is free of charge, and valid for 3 years at a time. When the 3 years is up (you'll notice when the telemarketers start calling you again), you'll have to give them another call.

The service is available only in Finnish, but as far as I can remember it's a recording - you may have to say something like "kyllä" as in "yes, I want telemarketers to stop calling me" in Finnish. If you're uncertain of your Finnish skills, have a Finn make the call from your phone.

Some companies share the contact information they get from customers to parties who in turn share those further. If you have entered your phone number information somewhere, it's possible that it will end up in the hands of telemarketers, and once it's out, there's no taking it back. Some of them will keep on calling you no matter what. If that happens, there's not much one can do, other than end the call (they're easy to tell from the sales pitch they're reluctant to stop) and block the number. They will keep switching numbers but it will eventually end. Until it starts with some other company. A good rule of thumb is to not answer (and block) all calls coming from numbers in countries you have no active affairs in, albeit Finnish numbers are being used, too, even though almost always the callers are speaking English.

The other option is to waste their time. I am also not supposed to get calls and, the few I answer, I ask them to "tell me more". I usually just leave the phone and they figure pretty soon that there's no one on the other side. But if you want to keep them busy, waste their time and prevent them from calling someone less informed, you can try to keep the conversation going on.. "sounds interesting, can you repeat? :o "... Don't react to whatever they say, and if you are tired or piss just put the phone aside. There's a chance they'll want to purge your number from their records.
