Brexit 29 March 2019 what will happen to us Brits?

Brexit 29 March 2019 what will happen?

Will British citizens need a visa to enter Finland?

Will Finnish citizens need a visa to visit their relatives in the UK?

Will British citizens still be able to register as EU citizens to stay in Finland?

What will happen to our Finnish pension etc?

Will our family members still be able to join us in Finland?

Visas to visit are very unlikely. Work permits sure will be required.

For families joining you most probably will be subjected to income requirements if you are not a Finnish citizen.

Nothing will happen before 1st January 2021.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

No deal is still a big possibility. There will be no transition period if there is no deal

One issue I have not seen mentioned anywhere is driving licences for us Brits in Finland. Up until now I believe an EU citizen (obviously including Brits) had 3 options: exchange their home-country licence for a Finnish licence within 18(?) months of arrival, continue to drive on their home-country licence as it is valid throughout the EU, or take a Finnish driving test. For a Brit who has been here longer than 18 months driving on their UK licence, what happens after Brexit? Will it be legal to continue to drive in Finland? Will a Finnish driving test become necessary?

I think once the situation is clear most probably they'll find a middle way. E.g if you have been driving for 5 years under a Finnish insurance you would be able to convert the licence without a test

Unlikely! Visa on arrival/ waiver, but again UK citizens may be restricted to the 90-day period.

Unlikely! That's the whole thing, right?

This is interesting for me as well. I know that Sweden restricts (agreed already?) that payment of pensions outside Sweden (was in the news). At the moment, they were talking about state pensions! But with these (and sorry for the rant), these #€%&/() pol1sh!tians there's no guarantee. If Finland can fleece you by not paying, they will.

I suppose yes, but as with any third country national, with income requirements.

Yup. UK has already indicated that they will put WU to visa-free list and EU will do the same unless UK puts visa requirement. So visas are highly unlikely as neither party wants them.

You mean EEA? The one with freedom of movement, major reason for Brexit?

It is hard to know for sure. Most likely, you will get some special dispensation. Or horror of horrors, you might have to actually get a work permit like the rest of undesirable foreigners who are not from the EU/EEA etc....

The problem with your work permit suggestion is we can't apply for one before March 29th and after March 29th we are illegal and cannot work. Migri is not exactly famous for moving quickly. Currently we are all in danger of losing our jobs on March 29th then being unemployed and possibly even here illegally while we re-apply.

Yes, in response to the OP, there are two scenarios.
one- May's deal is agreed, and there is a transition period. In this case, Uk citizens in Finland will mostly have the same position up until the end of 2020 (though extensions of transition period, etc). After that you have to worry.

two- a no deal brexit. In that case, we will be citizens of a third country from then on, with all that follows from that. i.e. we will not be EU citizens.

Various countries are planning for citizen's rights after a hard brexit, but it depends on what the UK offers, and I am not clear that Finland has finalised its position on how it will treat UK citizens afterwards.

However, up until the 29th March, you are an EU citizen, and you can make use of the rights available to you. You can apply for a Finnish driving licence and swap your UK licence for a Finnish licence. You can apply for a registration of your permanent residence here (if you have sufficient time here), which would then be valid after the UK leaves.

I would imagine it is sensible to keep very good documentation of your status in Finland, to be able to prove when you arrived, where you stayed, income, basis on which you stayed, etc. Even if there are opportunities which the Finnish state provides, it will likely be necessary to show you are eligible for those opportunities.

good luck
david

As I understand it you can only swap your UK driving licence for a Finnish licence within 18 months of arriving in Finland. Those of us who have been here longer than 18 months cannot just swap our licences before Brexit and we do not know if we will be allowed to drive after Brexit.
