You have to have a place to live before registering your residence with maistraatti
We have a place to stay (rental) - my company supported and we were able to have a contract on house.

Also, yes there is no need to apply for social security separately these days. We got it along with the RP Approval.

However, we have to go down to the local authority and let the know where we will stay (Tampere in our case)

KELA? But how? Do they send KELA card together with the RP card?

On approval I only got:
- Decision, with date range (type A, covered by KELA)
- Extract from Population information system (with personal identity code)
- Appeal instructions, ID instructions.

I'm waiting for the card.

No one talked about Kela. Social security number and personal identity code are the same thing.

You need to apply to Kela once you have registered in Maistrati.

Many people mistakenly refer to personal identity code as a social security code. American influence probably plays a role. However, they are not really the same thing since having a personal identity code does not imply access to social security.

Agreed! There definitely is the American influence perhaps.

It is "Personal identity code", which I was referring to.

I need to register at Kela.

Anyway be prepared, every time I have been asking for this in the public services they refer to it as "social security number".

You can do everything on the same day, but the Maistraatti is the first thing otherwise you won't be able to do the rest.

Bank account and ID card should take a couple of weeks and will be delivered by post to your address. Tax card and Maistraatti registry is immediate. Kela card should take long, maybe a month?

Can anyone answer this : since migri gives fic(Finnish identity code) at the same time as rpc (residency permit card), is there a form we can fill online regarding the registration of municipality of residence? Or you just go there and talk to someone?

Also, another (unrelated question) :
I will be relocating to Finland (from Canada) on June 26. Now that I have the residency card, should I show it to the border agent of the first Schengen country I will be entering, at the same time as my Canadian passport? Or they don't care about residence card?

Police officers and specially border guards have access to that information only with your passport. So just show it if they ask for it. In my experience the one who ask for residence permit card are the airline staff at checking desk if you only have one-way ticket. Of course, they don't have access to the same systems as the police/border guards.

Do you already have the address of residence?
