Pakosti selviäisi pian

Post by CrazyDiamond28 » Fri Oct 11, 2019 11:44 pm

Hello,

I have encountered a confusing phrase: mies, jonka olemassaolo siis pakosti selviäisi pian.

What I don't understand is what kind of function does pakosti have in here? Is it some kind of täytyy?
Also, does selviäisi come from selviätä, meaning to survive?

Thank you in advice for any help!

It's the adverbial -sti ending turning pakko into an adverb, and pakosti can be nicely translated here (if a bit literarily) as "of necessity," meaning because there is no alternative.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

selvitä + isi = selviäisi (becomes clearer, conditional sentence)
hmmmm... I just checked wiktionary and selvitä means becomes clearer, not clear

You've failed at reading comprehension and/or attention span. If you're going to say something, don't say something that will confuse other learners.

Go on the page you just described (wiktionary page for that word) and read the page carefully.
