Cost of Living and PhD Salary

Post by John7979 » Sun Dec 22, 2019 10:15 am

Hi all,

I have a PhD position offer in Kuopio. Gross salary is 2400 euro. Is it enough for two persons to live with social opportunities? Can you please share your experience?

By the way, what is the net salary, do you have any idea? I read that tax is %20; however, I am not sure about this.

Many thanks,
John.

Gross salaray of 2400 Euro for 2 people is a tight budget.
If you need a Residence Permit the income requirement for 2 people is 1700 Euro net. This is also a realistic estimate of the minimal monthly expenses.

Kuopio is less expensive than Helsinki. So 2400 is doable but there will be not much room for luxuries.

Some numbers for "not much room for luxuries":
Average salary in Finland is 3500 Euro, both partners working at average salary gives 7000 Euro per month.

median salary is e3000 for full time employees.
I don't know if having two " average salaries" in the same household is a fair assumption though.

if you have the right to student housing, I think it is doable.

In Finland both partners are working, twice the average or median salary is a reasonable estimate for a middle class household.
Two partners with good incomes might earn 10 000 Euro.
Two partners with office cleaning jobs might only earn 4000 Euro. With children this is a tight budget.

yes, but there are many people who are not full-time employees or employees at all. Their earnings are not included in that figure. According to these statistics, the median disposable income per household in 2017 was e23.000 pa.

But students have their perks and learn how to live economically so I would not discourage OP.

44% of all households in Finland are one person households, many widowed female pensioners.
The median household is a one-person household with median income, or an unemployed couple without children in Helsinki living from social security payments.
A family with children living from social security payments receives more money than the median household income.
