Hi everyone!
Had a double question hoping someone can help me out..
1- My gf and I both received in 2020 our Residency (Oleskelulupa card) under article 50-(Brexit).. both have Finnish social security numbers etc..Our card runs out in 2026, was wondering was there a possibility Migri would deny us an extension after that?
2- Were both worried about it, as we've just decided to buy a house in Finland, and at the very last stage of purchase the estate agent has said because we are British and our cards -residency runs out in 2 years, we need to apply for Non-EU person buying property.. I thought being a resident I had the right to buy a property? Were both freaking out a bit.. Any advice or opinions would be much appreciated...
Thank you all very much in advance
Pat

Did you receive a permanent (already lived in Finland for 5 years) or non-permanent permit?Brit_in_finland wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 4:58 pm1- My gf and I both received in 2020 our Residency (Oleskelulupa card) under article 50-(Brexit).. both have Finnish social security numbers etc..Our card runs out in 2026, was wondering was there a possibility Migri would deny us an extension after that?
Everyone without EU/EEA citizenship needs a permit from the government for buying real estate:Brit_in_finland wrote: ↑Wed Nov 06, 2024 4:58 pm2- Were both worried about it, as we've just decided to buy a house in Finland, and at the very last stage of purchase the estate agent has said because we are British and our cards -residency runs out in 2 years, we need to apply for Non-EU person buying property.. Thank you for the reply.
We got our residency cards under the article50/brexit "right of residence for British citizen under the withdrawal agreement".. We hadn't lived 5 years yet in Finland.
I thought that would mean we have percent residency? or am I wrong...

Is your card running out or is your residency status running out? These are very different things. If you have permenant residency, while your card may expire, your residency status does not-unless you move out of the country for more than two years (you can in certain cases ask for an extension of residency status even if you do move out for more than 2 years). In this case, you just get apply for and get a new card fairly easily. If you do not have permanent residency, it is impossible to know without further information whether you could be denied a permit extension.
Regarding #2.
I think this maybe related to the new rule that came into effect after 2020 where non-EU citizens need to apply for approval from the Finnish Ministry of Defence before they are allowed to purchase real-estate in Finland-due to our neighbor to the east engaging in some suspicious purchases in Finland. As long as you have not engaged in dodgy behavior, this should not be a problem for you at all.
