I’m a US citizen planning to marry my finnish girlfriend while on a 90 day tourist visa then apply for residence permit and I am now in Finland, and I have heard many people have done this successfully, but when I check the DVV website for examination of impediments to marriage, it says “Request an examination in good time.
You can request it at the earliest 4 months before the wedding date.
If one of the spouses is a foreigner, you should allow several weeks for the processing the matter.” https://dvv.fi/en/examination-of-impedi ... o-marriage)
Does this mean I wouldn’t have enough time to do this before my visa expires since it says 4 months before the wedding date, and would I need to go to the US embassy to get my side of the examination of impediments? This would be an issue since the US embassy in Helsinki has appointments backed up for months.

” You should request a certificate of your civilian status from the embassy or consulate of your state of residence/citizenship. In such a case, the certificate does not have to be legalised. You can also request a certificate of marital status from the Population Register Authorities of your state of residence/citizenship. The certificate submitted to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency must be less than four months old. The period of validity starts from the date of signature of the marital status certificate.”

There seem to be plenty of appointments available starting in a month.jameskimber wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2025 7:52 pmThis would be an issue since the US embassy in Helsinki has appointments backed up for months.

While Finland has a population database for over half a century, stone age US does not have anything like that.betelgeuse wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 12:08 pmjameskimber wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2025 7:52 pmhttps://dvv.fi/en/examination-of-impedi ... o-marriage)Read the page you linked fully for more options:jameskimber wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2025 7:52 pmDoes this mean I wouldn’t have enough time to do this before my visa expires since it says 4 months before the wedding date, and would I need to go to the US embassy to get my side of the examination of impediments? US Embassy in Helsinki wrote:In order to marry in Finland, you will have to present documentary evidence to the local civil registrar that there are no legal impediments to your marriage under the laws of the United States. As none of the U.S. state governments issue statements of non-impediments, most Finnish registrars accept an affidavit sworn by you at the Embassy to the effect that you are not presently married (or that all previous marriages have been legally terminated, provided certified evidence of such termination is attached).

Is "we do not have any marriage on record" the same as proof that a person is not married?betelgeuse wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 8:58 amThe embassy gets it wrong: https://doh.wa.gov/licenses-permits-and ... tus-letterFinlandGirl wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2025 1:51 amWhile Finland has a population database for over half a century, stone age US does not have anything like that.

I have some doubts Washington State gets notified automatically when a resident marries in Las Vegas.

It's better proof than going to the embassy and signing an affidavit. The embassy does no checking.FinlandGirl wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 8:40 pmIs "we do not have any marriage on record" the same as proof that a person is not married?betelgeuse wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 8:58 amThe embassy gets it wrong: https://doh.wa.gov/licenses-permits-and ... tus-letterFinlandGirl wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2025 1:51 amWhile Finland has a population database for over half a century, stone age US does not have anything like that.
