VERO Mistake

Post by cdvd101 » Tue Jul 01, 2025 8:02 pm

Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advice or anyone who has experienced something similar. I am a Canadian citizen and have lived in Finland for almost four years. I was in the military in Canada and was injured while serving in Afghanistan and am now in receipt of essentially my salary for life as I am not able to work.

The tax treaty between Finland and Canada lays out how "war veterans allowances" as they put it, are to be taxed. The past three years I have not been taxed on this portion of my income due to this treaty. Each year i have spoken with VERO as i am very paranoid about not paying the proper tax or owing a large amount and they confirmed that due to this tax treaty, I will not pay tax on this portion in Finland.

Fast forward to today, I received my tax decision for this year and owe more than 10k Euros. Nothing has changed this year from the previous years. I can see on the decision they taxed my income that Vero has told me in the past is not taxable.

Because I am a very paranoid and untrusting person, I have called Vero numerous times over the last few years and explained to them I am paranoid they have made some mistake in not taxing me. They assured me that they cant tax me on this portion because of the tax treaty and now this year it appears they have.

I have called Vero and no one can tell me why this has happened or what they will do about it. I am very paranoid about having to now pay back taxes for the past few years as this would amount to over 50k euros and I do not have that money and it would effectively bankrupt my family.

Does anyone have any guidance or advice in relation to this? I really appreciate any help. I am always very thorough on my taxes out of fear of something like this happening and not it has become a reality. Thank you.

One thing you could do is contact a tax lawyer here who specializes in cross-border matters. They should be able to shed light on the issue and provide guidance on how to deal with Vero.

With an appeal they will have to justify their position.
