Recommended Dive Shops/Sites?

Calling all divers!

Does anyone know of any good dive shops, preferably in the Helsinki region?

Also, if anyone knows of any good sites to explore, please share

I've heard there's some interesting lake diving, has anyone heard or had experiences with that?

Before you ask only went diving once to get my basic Padi in Sharm el Sheikh => clear & warm water, not really as I would imagine a Finnish lake will be

I was also looking for personal recommendations as well. Finnsuit is my first choice but I was wondering if there were other ones here that people have dealt with and had good experiences with.

Sharm el Sheikh sounds amazing- I haven't been there myself but I've heard it's a great spot. Probably a few more fishies than here

it is as long as you don't mind the dozens of italians trampling the coral, if you have some money go for it in the few day there saw an amazinf amount of fishes and even a shark or two (ok in the distance but still

)

You wont get any stories about my experiences of me ion the local waters, as said too cold and muddy for my taste (I know, I know I'm soft)

We liked the one in Tikkurila. At least they tried to sell something to us, instead of:

"what do you recomend"

Having just returned from 3 weeks under the Ionian sea (5th time same place)

I have stowed my gear away in the cellar untill next year..I have spent too many fruitless hours searching for somewhere in sensible driving distance of Helsinki (Lake/sea/river) where one can see more than 3 meters through muddy/weedy waters..If anyone finds somewhere please tell me.

I think that wreck diving is most popular from Helsinki. The missus has gone a couple of times on a boat from pohjoisranta. Other places are porkkalaniemi and Hanko (but not when the fast boats are around)

I s'pose all the diving schools do regular trips.

I took a few trips with NDI - http://www.divein.fi. Nice folks, well organised trips but since they can only work with what nature provides and around here it's all all a little murky

Also went on one trip with http://www.aquaworld.fi/ (at least I think that was their name, it was a while ago) - a little less costly with post-dive sausage!

Mostly wrecks - visited this one: http://www.snuuba.com/slps/html/2003/di ... ve624.html

Some great pictures on that site, it'll give you a good indication of what to expect...

Cool! Thanks for all that, a lot of meaty goodness in that post...

If anyone else is considering doing something like this in Helsinki, Divesystems (http://www.divesystems.net) has thier very own wreck park (!) with wrecks that are viewable even with basic certification (PADI and NAUI) They have their own boat, too, so it should be quite easy to arrange something. That's super fortunate because in the group we are in, we've got a range of certifications, and they can work with you to figure out the right wrecks.

Also, Happy Divers in Helsinki have a few wrecks as well. http://www.happydivers.net

Also, both places happily rent equipment.

I have been so often disappointed by my dive attempts in Finland..I know of one OK'ish lake but about 100 kids also know it so it is useless at weekends...
The sea...!!

Hi,

If you would like to get a little bit farther away from Helsinki, you might consider diving in the Archipelago Sea. There are several schools which offer trips, I think the most famous wreck is in Utö, named "Park Victory".
Most of the diving in the Baltic, this part at least, is a bit boring if you want warm, clear water with lots of marine life. In that case, head to the Red Sea or at least the Atlantic.
I am a marine biologist by profession so I usually find something to interest me on dives in Finland, however, a poor shallow dive pottering about on the west coast of Ireland will turn up far more life than several trips on the Finnish coast. Then again, it is possible to see perch and pipefish at the same site, or herring, and the sculpins are very pretty and common here in Finland. I guess it depends what kind of diver you are, i.e. a wreckie, a techie, a biological, a depth-freak, a Pepsi-maxer, or. worst of all, a photographer
