No, you're not. Porto supporter here. But I'm not so interested on the Premiership, other than for Ronaldo and Postiga. Those kids have the potential and if they keep their feet on the ground they might soon be dream players.simon wrote:Looks like we are the only football heads in this group.

I for one am interested in all football, Portugese being no exception. I referee here in Finland for Suomen Palloliito. Who's your tip for the Portugese title? And tell me some more about this RonaldoFootball in Finland Europe and the World

Im interested in this Ronaldo kid. Is he going to be another Forlan. Played well in the preseason friendly but that was against a utd side who were very tired so my gran could have as well.......
Ill be very surprised if he is going to make it in the PL. The english PL is too hard and fast for him....
Just my personal opinion
Tell me Im wrong

Ronaldo is caming from Sporting Lisbon (aka Lisbon..) perhaps the best place to grow as a player in the country. Quaresma (new sign from Barça), Viana (Newcastle Utd) and Simão (Benfica Lisbon, previously Barça) are some other kids that came from that club during the last 5 years. There's also a few other kids already waiting their turn in line and don't forget Figo, also from Sporting.
If you can't afford to sign big names or even keep your brightests, your best bet is to invest on youngters. Same with Postiga (former fcPorto player), Hotspurs is no team for him, but they have the money.. Hopefully Porto won't miss him and will renew the title. They have the best team, but ofter winning everything last season their motivation might be an issue.
I'd agree with that. Are Porto historically the most succesful Portugese club? Whats your view on Carlos Queiroz, think he'll be a success at Madrid? I think Man United are going to miss him this season, I think he was an important factor for us winning the title back last year. Why do the best Portugese/ Brazillian players always snub England and head for Spain? eg Ronaldhinio.. is it the language (is spanish easy to learn for a Portugese speaker), Climate, style of play or what?ajdias wrote: Same with Postiga (former fcPorto player), Hotspurs is no team for him
Times ahead do look promising for PortugalFast forward to the 21st Century and Portugal is said to have unearthed a "platinum generation", with new Manchester United signing Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro the pick of crop.
His contemporaries include Helder Postiga, Hugo Viana, Simao Sabrosa, Tiago Mendes and Ricardo Quaresma.
It is a group of players that Portugal manager Felipe Scolari has started to use as he prepares for Euro 2004 and that has also been coveted by Europe's elite clubs.

I'll take some time to answer your questions over the next months:-)
Porto is the most successful team in Portuguese DEMOCRATIC history (after 1974), and was specially strong in the late 80's (European champion in View, 87 against Bayern Muchen, unforgetable game) and 90's. Before, Benfica completely dominated benefitting from being the "regim team". Have you heard about the 3 F's, Fátima (faith), Football and Fado (music)? Check Portugal for beginners if your're interested (

And for sure you know of the great Eusebio, he played for benfica during the 60's and had some fabulous apperances on England 66 (like the 5-3 against Korea).
Queirós: I don't know about Queiroz, his very methodological and has talent but I wonder if he'll be able to handle all those "prima-donnas". Although a bit cocky, Porto's coach - Mourinho, is in IMHO more capable and will fly high (he's only 40).
Spain: They have "the best championship of the world", so it's said. Before, in the early 90's it was Italy and most players wanted to play there.
Of course, the climate, the culture, geography and the language also play a role. And yes, Spanish is pretty easy to me, it's very close to porttuguese. Portuguese can normally understand it pretty well, they are used to have spaniards over and to travel and visit spain (where else can we go by car?). And they don't expect their guests to speak or even understand their language.
But that does not entitle you to come to Portugal shouting "Hola, entonces que tal?" (see also the TIPS on the Pt for beginners site).

Eusébio (1942-) Other countries have actors, writers, scientists as their most renowned
celebrity. Portugal has a football player. Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, called
"the black panther", was born in the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique and played
most of his carreer for Benfica of Lisbon. With Benfica and the Portuguese national team
he became one of the best football players of all times. He travels a lot as the Portuguese
national team's public relations and is recognized wherever he goes. In 1994, he had a statue
built for him in front of Benfica's stadium. In the above picture you can see him in action
against Hungary in the 1966 World Cup. If you can't tell which one is the african born Eusébio
and which are the hungarians, you are an idiot (sorry about that). Of course, you could also
be american and, in that case, you will still be trying to understand why he is playing
football without even a helmet.
I wondered about that : Brazillian club in the world club championships 2000, that United took part inVasco da Gama (1469-1524) Probably the most famous Portuguese navigator. Vasco da Gama
discovered the sea route from Europe to India, going around the african continent.
This allowed the Portuguese to break the spice monopoly held by the arabs and italians.
He now has a bridge, a shopping center, an aquarium and several football clubs with his name.

Hmmm I think the biggest problem for a manager at Real is the directors making all the footballing decisions for youajdias wrote:Queirós: I don't know about Queiroz, his very methodological and has talent but I wonder if he'll be able to handle all those "prima-donnas".

BTW still haven't forgiven you for this

So ajdias whats your expectations for Euro 2004 Portugal? England should make it. Sadly Finland aren't going to. I went to see two of their qualifiers against Wales and Italy in Helsinki. Wales were a bit of a surprise in that group and have been playing well. Finland were outclassed by Italy but definitely weren't helped by the ref that evening
Of course Portugal qualify as hosts and with home advantage and their new young stars they must have a better shot than usual?

Well the missus had to get up for work at 5.30 this morning, she woke me up at 6. I was drinking a small dram of whisky about the time of that post last night, as a little nightcapsimon wrote:Olly I saw the times of your posts.....dont you go to bed????

So what do you think about Spurs then. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 159775.stm
They should concentrate on getting some decent midfielders in no point in having good strikers if the ball is at the back....
Have you been following the Under 17's World Championship??
