Sounds harsh? Well I'm tired of all the screw ups that get their spilt milk wiped up by the government multiple times. Sure, it's nice the government takes some responsibility a few times, everyone is entitled to some help and some hard times, but when are all these people going to grow up and contribute something to society? Of course labor, the cost of living, and benefits are expensive when there is a not working, not contributing group that just sucks off the rest of society. I know it is more complicated and this isn't a black and white issue, but again, just curious about the health care related costs.
See Megs, you're coming more Finnish by the day... "I don't wanna pay high taxes just to pay off some drunks/slackers/etc" way.

This is something that is often misinterpreted by the newbies (on this site) as hostility towards foreigners due to comments made on this site by the ones already living in Finland.

I don't think there's anyone on this site that doesn't want foreigners, but it's more to do with the fact that Finland doesn't need more people sponging off the government, so if someone wanting to move to Finland has a plan of survival and wants to become a productive member of the Finnish society, I'm sure s/he is very welcome.

I felt so sorry for the staff, the majority of people in the casualty section were there for alcohol related accidents. The staff were clearly pleased to see someone actually ill and not drunk and abusive. I wouldnt like to spend my evening at work clearing up vomit and having horrible things shouted at me.

The icing on the cake was that they bought in a 14 year old girl who was blotto and found passed out in a bush :(

I have to wonder if the staff in accident and emergency get attacked a lot. I got the impression they have a lot of 'regulars'

I dont think any sort of pay increase is enough for that environment!
As Megstertex implied, the amount that nurses get paid is not the only problem here - we should first ask why we have all these problems and emergencies in the first place, and whether they could be somehow reduced (the alcohol-related problems, not nurses  )

yes, the next step is to ban alcohol in restaurants and bars after the ban on smoking.

Well I haven't seen many lazy foreigners sponging, though I'm sure they exist. If anything, they have a hunger to work, to fit in, to assimilate, they have more drive and ambition, a reason to work for it. Whereas there is an alarming attitude among these damn (Finnish) school kids that nothing is their problem, they don't have to work for anything or have consequences for anything, and that someone else will fix it for them when they screw up, which they are prone to do, having grown up alone, or in broken homes, and not socialized. What's the big deal if you sleep in and are hungover and miss school or work? Then it's one day closer to Friday and getting blitzed beyond coherence all over again, and escaping life, and responsibilities. It's all so tiring anyway..."ei me jaksaa....."

Not to disagree your perception on Finnish school kids, but you can't deny the fact that there's a number of questions on this forum about benefits and free education from aspiring immigrants, in the spirit of only taking advantage of Finnish society.

Well there is a high price to pay for the free "benefits" here. And that's pretty pathetic if people are willing to move here with no connection to Finland away from family, friends, and culture, just for the free stuff, which usually, doesn't end up being so free anyway.

And I wouldn't say that I'm becoming more Finnish, that there is the protestant work ethic coming out that is ingrained in my culture from day one, which sadly has been turned into work your ass off for no vacation time or life, but hey, your title on your business card looks cool, and sometimes you get to go on business trips in cool places, and the cost of living is low and ridiculous loans are easy. 30 thousand dollar a year millionaire lifestyles. But if you have no job, you have no health care, no safety net, no nothing, so don't screw it up. The two cultures are very different extremes.

Agreed - though it's not "only" Finland, I believe these problems exist in many other "developed" countires as well - and it is not going unnoticed.

Be it less or more common in other countries, that is beside the point though. I just wonder where this alienation, and devil-may-care attitude springs from? Is it boring to live in a "well-being society"? :?

Oh well slipping from the original subject a bit...

I have first hand experience of being in an ER in 2 different hospitals..and I can say that they were the Best professionals I ve seen than anywhere!!!
no matter what kind of patients they were handling...
and used appropriate care and attention in some cases where they knew the patients already..
