Well well well i got the point now but only one doubt in my head, if i can live there while i waiting for residence permit? or should apply for some language school so i can be there? Because while waiting for the approve i should do something such as work ( i dont think i can get one because i dont speak finnish) or just be a student somewhere?

you can live while waiting but you will have no work permit or possiblity to study during that time to all i know any way till you get your visa.
so it would be easyer if you wait your visa at home country a come here when you have your vise ready.unless you got some 1 that can suport you till then.
good luck

Hi, Jedyne. Are you in Finland already?

I am from the US and I married my Finn husband there, in the US. Then when I came to Finalnd, we went to the police station and made the application for my residency. That takes 2 weeks, on average they said. It used to be immediate but the made changes and it takes 2 weeks now.

I got my permit for one year. After that I can get my next permit for years. The residency permit gives me the right to work, and I think many other rights a Finn would have. I am sure your Fiance can help you with this. Once I had this I applied for KELA, the immigrant integration program, etc.

As for whether you can live here whiole waiting for the residence permit, yes you can.

Actually my husband somehow convinced them to give me my residency that very day. They stuck a sticker right in my passport and that was that.

The US and Finland are both part of the Visa waiver program, so I didn't need a visa. I came here as if I were a tourist, I guess.

You may want to look into or have your Fiance find out the particulars of coming to Finland on a tourist visa and then marrying a Finn, I think that may make things difficult by making the authorities suspicious.

The reason my husband and I decided to marry in the US is because it seemed easier.

You and your fiance need to figure out what plan is easiest, and for Thailand I don't know. Is it possible that you marry in Thailand? I think your fiance, being a Finn (did I understand correctly?) should find out all the possibilities on the Finland side while you look into the Thai documentations needed, etc.

I think since your plan is to move to Finland, you mostly need to worry about Finnish laws, etc. I didn't need to really consider any US laws concerning this issue since I was moving to Finland.

It also depends a lot if you go queue in Helsinki with the hundreds of people or if you are in Nowheremäki where they'll ask people from the coffee room out to see a real live foreigner and have you sign the guestbook...
Cheers, Hank W.

ok, topic has changed from cizitenship to residence permit. As long as you get married in Finland and make it shown in the police register system, there is no problem of getting a residence permit, mine took only couple of weeks.

After that if you want get citizenship after certain years, I got the impression that you have to past finnish language test. and boy, that is not easy. you really need couple of years to learn that. Or, has it been changed that as long as you stay here over 4 years, you can start to apply? But I don't believe so, the finnish government has never been that easy on anything-:)
