I prefer the "grammar later" approaches. I'm currently in the midst of a self-constructed/ self-imposed Finnish immersion program, because I'm trying to teach myself and have nobody else to speak to. I currently have three computer CDs (a children's vocabulary builder, adult beginner, and adult intermediate), plus three different audio CD+book training courses. I do the computer CDs at home, and run the audio CDs in the car while going to/from work. I break up the pattern in the car by also listening to Eppu Normaali (Suomirock) and some Varttina (world/folk music) to try and pick up some of the lyrics at high speed. (The singing, not my car!) It works for me because I'm keeping it fun and not getting bogged down with all the rules (though I did just feel the need for getting a grammar book, which I now have but am holding at arm's length!). But admittedly it is a "swiss cheese" type of result (lots of body with lots of holes in it :D ). My daughter and I are taking our first ever trip to Finland next summer, and I would like to be able to operate occasionally in spoken Finnish & read signs, etc.

And I'm embarrassed to admit that I forgot something very important. I also have an e-mail pen pal/ friend in Tampere that has been a great help to me with explaining gaps in the training programs, plus how to say things that don't show up in the training materials. It is all in writing, but still it helps very much.

Number 1, definetly! As long as the teacher is not one of those obsessed with kirjakieli and do introduce puhekieli from the beggining.
