This is true... And actually underlines a distinct difference between immigrants and immigrants here in Finland, in my opinion... I mean look at the hoards of Asian and Middle Eastern food shops here, they wouldn't have the balls (financially, at least) to price gouge their own expat countrymen the way Behnford's does... That's why the great Asian shops (like my fave Vii Voan) here are always packed with customers, fresh stock and wide selection will thrive -- and why Behnford's will remain at best a niche boutique for people who have too much anyway.

Do the ultra rich Americans really eat Fluffernutter sandwiches!!?? Trailer trash central at the WTC!

Yeehaw!

That'll be 20 euros per Yeehaw, sir...

Take it back if you want.

However, to be fair, I think the thread topped itself when someone listed an Asian grocery store as "but can't remember the name!"

I was actually trying to google for a list. There is *bound* to be one. Problem is that these small stores come & go.

In shopping malls: Itäkeskus used to have an Asian and a small Mid-Eastern. the mid-eastern is still there, across the passage to "over the bridge" from the "old side". Nice marinated olives. There is an African? store in the new kamppi - haven't checked that one out. Myyrmanni mall has "Zaza" (mid-eastern mainly) on the 3rd floor past the hairdresser and drycleaners'.

Leppävaara =? (the one up towards Lintuvaara near Blue Jay apparently quit?).

Oh, but every other Finnish store does. I do categorize Stockmann Herkku to the rich & retarded category as well. See now when you are trying to scrape a living on buying what is on "tarjous" in Lidl then certain price range stores just won't cut it. Oh yeah, Eurospar had Karjala dachshund for 5.80 - its all to each ones priorities.

I don't really care what I eat as long as theres enough of it

I understand your stance... and the first time I shopped in Lidl and spent 40 euros on a CARTFUL of stuff, I pledged never to use a regular store again... But that didn't really come to be, because Lidl is a lidl too far from our house to be convenient every single day/week.

However, I would just point out that Stockmann could've priced the Ben & Jerry's half litres of ice cream basically around the 6 euro mark (like the mövenpick) but they didn't. I am not rich, but slightly retarded, and sometimes get good stuff from Herkku... But in my heart am a Lidl person.

I go to the Lidl maybe once a week - same as you its a lidl too far, but "in the village" next to the cottage so its worth the detour. And the S-market is also excellent there so I go stock up on certain stuff they have. I also have close a "netto Jätti" where some dry stuffs and conserves can be found as well as detergents and the likes. Oh, and of course in the summertime Hong Kong.

I actually found "american marshmallows" in Hong Kong last summer. Had roasted marshmallows first time in... 20 odd years. Just as disgustingly sweet as I remembered ;)

And what's the normal price "at home"?
The difference is that Stockmann can "build" a market for their products unlike small shops - nor do they have an interest unless given sole rights to merchandise the products. BNF's niche might be those products that actually don't have a market here, in which case the options left are have it mailed from home or at premium price from WTC. And you can rest assured that if they are overpricing (in the economical sense) they are only inviting competition.

The name of the red & white Asian shop on Kolmas linja that no one can remember is "Asianic Trading".

Vii Voan's selection is distinctly more Vietnamese and Thai while Asianic has a greater selection of Malaysian & Singaporean foodstuffs. Huge differences there. On some occasions at Vii Voan, I remembered smelling a bad odour that probably came from the 'not too fresh' vegetables....I usually shop at Asianic these days.

It's funny you say that, I've found myself at Aseanic more often
than I've been at Vii Voan recently. It's got a lot to do, however, with
the fact that after years of going to Vii Voan, they're starting to treat
me like a farang, which utterly p*sses me off.
