Rents from KOAS (the local student apartment foundation) aren't that high and they include water, electricity and an Internet connection. But there you would need to live in a shared flat (with 1-2 flatmates depending of the place). The prices go from 160€ to 250€ with shared flats. A one room flats cost both sides of 300€ but you need to queue for them (and that takes like two years for us finns). Of course you can rent a one from a private person but that usually costs more depending of the area.

If you're a student -> check out KOAS at

http://www.koas.fi/

... and/or contact the International Office of the University of Jyväskylä / University of Applied Sciences, if you're going to study at either of them.

Otherwise... well, you'll get perfectly by in Jyväskylä using English in your everyday life (shopping etc.), but unless I'm greatly mistaken, the basic communal services on the web (and in the newspapers, etc) are pretty much 100% only available in Finnish. There's a clear-cut difference between the notions of "foreign language abilities of a society" and "language in which a given society works".

Lesson one: the official language of Finland is Finnish (and Swedish, but not really in Jyväskylä) - therefore, many services may only be available in the Home Lingo... check out e.g. the estate agencies' ("kiinteistövälitys") web sites given here...

http://www.dime.net/etuovi2/yritykset_a ... uomi.shtml

You'll find some basic info on the town's web site

http://www.jyvaskyla.fi/international/

Good luck in your search anyway

Well, it used to be my home town  Don't get me wrong I quite like Jyväskylä and wouldn't mind living there - however, The Powers That Be landed me in Helsinki

I hope you'll like Jyväskylä too!
