Why do you guys come to Finland when you could move to Alaska, less hassle, same mosquitoes - and darkness... Helsinki and Anchorage are about on the same latitude ;)
Been there, done that

Actually, I figure that's why I've never had any problems with the dark
parts of the year until this year when we don't have any snow.

It is usually the minority who make all the noise.

Open forums in general are self selective... In other words only those looking and having issues are the ones who post.

I am happy to be back here. You can look at my other posting. Immigration was a pain in the ass. Spent two weeks in Miami of which 50% I was stuck in traffic or in lines waiting for something and at the last day my credit card was stolen. On top of that no one speaks English anymore and there is garbage all over the place.

Sounds great

You have also checked Mol.fi right?

Why not take an exploratory trip with the purpose of searching for work and visitng the family? Worse that could happen would be learning the tricks to getting in the door!

'are all foreign born husbands bitter'

No, but from my experience all the ex-husbands are, they've been through a bad experience with one Finnish woman, ergo all Finnish women are bad news.

Assuming your husband is white, then like elsewhere in the western world he won't have any problems with racism while walking down the street minding his own business, unlike if you happen to be obviously foreign, i.e. a different colour. But when he opens his mouth he 'might' get some negative comments, but some of the IT people I know (Finnish) go to America on business, so at work he should be ok, especially if he says he's very impressed with 'Remedy Entertainment'.

thank you, your replies and the links have been very helpful.

this has saved us months and months of sending applications and expecting results only to be disappointed.

my dh will have to try and come over for a couple of weeks and hopefully try to line up interviews while he is there, the other options don't really work for us.

he is currently working for a swedish-ownded company, so he has some experience with working in a scandinavian system. we had hoped this company would transfer us to Sweden, so that we could take it from there, but that hasn't happened. he is also in process of getting a PMI certification, hopefully that will be helpful in, that is another couple of weeks away.

i am glad that several of you are happy there, i was getting worried!

thanks again for sharing your experiences and information, this has helped tremendously!

we come here coz we just love people like u HANK, we will go nowhwere else then helsinki :)

i am happy in Finland and with Finnish people and i love my wife and really happy to be with her and i woulod move back anytime she likes , but hell i hate how the immigration really think and most of the Finnish gov. officials that's why am bitter sometimes.

Obviously the older generation in finland hate us foreigners that's why as foreign husband we become unhappy , but never mind the youth are always freindly and welcoming to foreigners. it is not a matter of hating the culture and the people , it is a matter of hating the stupid laws that are unfair sometimes like in my and many others situation.

but well come here and try urself . it is worth moving here once in ur life.

I note where you live...

It's funny. I seem notice people are "ruder" to me if they think I am Finnish. :D

Once they realize I am a foreigner they (usually) are like: "Ohhhh, sorri!!!" and then are really sweet and helpful. I had one old lady go from literally pushing me out of the way to helping me find the address I was looking for.

oh gannies love us foreigners.

i tell you , all those all ladies are watching me all the time.

but hey they are the best to learn finnish from.

don't try asking a young finn to help you speak finnish , while the old ladies are the best . they just speak nothing else and you have to manage.

P.S : it's getting cold here.

'oh gannies love us foreigners.'

Is this because 'us foreigners' are old enough to be grandads?
