If I apply for the Finnish citizenship, do you know if I can keep my German citizenship as well? I will still have ties to Germany as my parents life here...

Kiitos, Kristina

How can I lose German citizenship?

- by voluntarily acquiring a foreign citizenship
If you willingly apply for a foreign citizenship and obtain it, the German citizenship is automatically lost. If you obtain a foreign citizenship without an application for naturalization, you remain a German citizen.

- Please note: Loss of citizenship can be avoided by obtaining a special permit ("Beibehaltungsgenehmigung") before you are naturalized in a foreign country.
Cheers, Hank W.

Hei Kristina

Are you sure you want citizenship and not just residence. The later doesnt affect your German citizenship at all. I dont see any reason for you to change your citizenship the EU will probably all be one big happy family soon anyway ;-)

Apart from the things you state (voting in national elections or working for government departments which require some kind of security clearance) what difference does your citizenship make if you come from an EU country (especailly old EU).

I only mentioned because people often get confused between citizenship and residence.

Well, I was just wondering what would happen if I'd apply. I think when you life in a foreign country that you like and where you plan to stay it is nice to own the citizenship. With the citizenship you can vote and that is important for me.

But you are right. Let's see what will happen when the European constitution is ratified. :)

Kristina,

Your thoughts are really impressive when you say that, one should like to get citizenship of the country where one plans to stay and likes it.

But there are many other things that goes on to make a foreign country as your own, first and foremost is the job, cause you need money to sustain your life. I am sure there are several other factors as well...

I think you are thinking too early, come here , stay in Finland, like the place , get a job and then apply for citizenship. Being an EU citizen you are conferred most of the rights and I think there is more than a year to vote for parliament of Finland.

Good Luck

Hey Greenhorn,

I think you got me a bit wrong. I just asked what would happen if I'd apply. I was thinking of the future, not saying I’d do it tomorrow ;)

I'm still quite young, I'll graduate from school this summer. My plans are to come to Finland as an Au-Pair this autumn to get to know the country and traditions better than I know them from my holidays in Finland. I also wanna improve my language skill, which are right now, quite bad because I'm so busy in school. After my year as an Au-Pair, if Finland is like I expected it to be, I'd like to apply at the Helsinki University. I hope that will work, I know how hard it is to be accepted as a degree student. :(
I think the studies will take me some years.. after this time I'll decide if I'll stay in Finland. OF course the fact if I’ll have a job or not will be an important point for my decision.
If I, then, decide to say, I think it will be the right time to apply for the Finnish citizenship as it makes many things easier.

Hi,

Oh :? , I thought you are thinking of applying for citizenship while moving here.So I was wrong.

Yeah your plans are good and realistic. I have read from so many posts here in FF that getting job is difficult in Finland, so wanted to caution you, but you have good idea of it. There are other reasons as well, like Finland can be hell lonely at times. But your situation is different, you are planning to study in university so you will always have circle of your own and you are youth too !!

anyway all the best for your plans,

thanx :D

I really hope everything will work fine for me in Finland. I'm so exited about the time as an Au-Pair.

The only problem I'm having right now is, that it is quite hard to find the right family.. (I need one in the Helsinki area because I want to attempt the intensive course Finish for foreigners, and I need to be free 4 times a week from 10.00 - 11.30...).

I made a post in the family board, I hope I'll find a nice family that matches to me! :D
