The nearest spring would have been less than 100 m from the house, but we decided to have a well within 50 m. The water may not be that different.

Many people remembered that there had been a spring somewhere near and lots of people tried to find it, until someone came and remembered the exact place. I hear that the spring had been the municipality's reserve place for fire extinguishing 90 years ago!

Actually, now that the place of the fountain is known, it cannot be regarded as any wonder that there is a pond for fish close to the fountain and there had been a small lake in the 20's. The lake was dried in later years.

Depends what you mean with paying, well has to be usable and in tolerances and you have to take care of waste water depending usage and of course build it etc.
You end up paying something. And if you are in "county pipe area" you probably either be in it or cry and be in it.
