I met a rep from Orion Pharmaceuticals today.
She said all lab SOPs are written in English.
She also mentioned that she thinks Orion would welcome foreign influence, but may not be convinced enough that people would want to move to Finland. As such it's possible they may not advertise that widely. So definitely worth trying to chase them up.

Dusan is fairly cool if you did fancy finding out more about the work.
Good Luck!

Hi FishLiberator,
I've applied for the above position. Tell me, did they call you over from abroad for interview or just conduct a telephone interview?
Where are you from originally? What is the commute from Herttoniemi to Porvoo like? I'm wanting to live in Helsinki / Espoo ...
Well, I'm now well into the search and am sending some speculative letters and joining the "talent pools" on some companies. Lets see what happens ...

I have some friends who lived in Huddersfield. Every time I hear that name, I think of Pottersfield from "It's a Wonderful Life." I'd want to move away, too.
Do you know them? C&S with baby J? He is British, she is Finnish.

My brother lives in High Burton & his wife's from Brighouse maybe you know them too... ?

I came here for an EU funded chemistry post-doc.... though not orgasmic. If you can get straight into industry, I'd do it. If you can't a post-doc may give you the chance to get your feet under the table and make yourself a bit more saleable, make some contacts. Dont' worry about the UK split of Academic / industrial career, it's much less of an issue.
If you're from a polymers and pigments background, then Kemira's coatings division would be the obvious target for you.

If you want to work in Porvoo (why?) it's to the east of Hki... Espoo is to the West. You don't want to commute through Hki.

More importantly, is that Fish & Chips pub still going, the one on the north side of the M62, you turn of at junction (?) then hang a right, twist and turn up the hill and it's on the left?
Talking of fish and chips, has anyone tried to give it a go at home? Fishy? You must have tried?

Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
Yes it is!Karhunkoski wrote:More importantly, is that Fish & Chips pub still going, the one on the north side of the M62, you turn of at junction (?) then hang a right, twist and turn up the hill and it's on the left?

LMAO. I'm sure you'll know him. Actually, on the off chance that you've got a dodgy handshake then you might actually know him!DaviThomas wrote:Porvoo is only where Borealis chemicals is based.
I have no unnatural longings to live there!!!
Karen: As for your friends in hudd ... probably need a bit more info than C&S with baby .... lol
Sinikala: I think I may know your brother
Hudd ain't such a bad place, its just time for me to move on ...
Town - The Shabab is amongst the best curries I've had. Slurp.
Nope, I've been vegetarian for more than a decade. And much as I love chip shop chips, I know that trying to produce them without having access to a chip shop is a futile exercise. Home made chips are always crap.Karhunkoski wrote:Talking of fish and chips, has anyone tried to give it a go at home? Fishy? You must have tried?

Re: Scientist wanting to move to Helsinki
Well, with a little bit of patience I have found myself a good job in Espoo. I'll be a researcher with Silecs Oy.
Bascially, I hunted and hunted whilst living in England. I found www.mol.fi was the best and since I only speak basic finnish I used the keyword searche "english". Managed to get two interviews this way with the latter landing me the job.
Soon I'll be moving over ...

Now remember, Join an unemployment fund or Union from day 1
Take insurances ( Health, renters ...)
Ask for Housing/renting recommendations from your company ( in case you are not able to get a recommendation for apartment from the company for a temp basis)
Ask company what benefits ( Mobile phone, DSl connections, car, Language training from day 1 etc ) they provide..
