So what is your problem with me you stupid woman? The facts remain that Romania is exporting beggars to the EU. What does it tell me of your country? Have your teachers explain this why is it somehow my fault the whole EU benefits from Romanian Beggar Exports? Do you ever discuss with your teachers there how these unfortunate people are your cultural ambassadors to the EU? The first "Romanian" someone meets or hears about? The Finns can't tell the difference between a romanian and a rroma, you all have the same passport.

And you should learn to read. I wrote - "if you expected to be treated like a king - thanks to your fellow countrymen you can be now expected to be be treated like the gipsy king". Where exactly am I calling you a gipsy? Did drakula bite you when you were little? I said someone (you) will get treated as a gipsy. Now as a woman you know the difference between a man and a woman? So if a man dresses as a woman, is he a woman? So if he is treated as a lady, is he a lady?

And that treatment is not something I made up. Just ask any of your "better" Romanians here, they are having very much fun getting the telephones slammed into their ears after they're asked where they are from.

-Hello, I called about the flat.
-Ok, Whats your name?
-Constantin Lupuscu
-And where you from?
-From EU, Romania...
-Sorry, wrong number.
-Hello?
uuuuuuuu

I told them to say "north Bulgaria" or "east Hungaria" next time.

Things have changed dramatically in 2 years. Before that nobody had even heard of Romania except of Nadia Comaneci and a few other people. Now its headlines every week - next thing you know theres twenty living in a tent behind your house. And it still is the Finns can't tell the difference between a romanian and a rroma.

And you can ask your husband what reputation the Finns have. In Sweden and Russia and Estonia definitely, a few places in Germany too. I think the Finnish Wino Exports stopped in the 1970's. Swedish press can be blamed... en Finne igen. Back then it was also the bank robbers, now we've been replaced also in that profession. But see now I can discuss of these because I know the facts that have formed the stereotype and I cannot be upset of the facts. Even if I don't carry a knife why should I get upset if some Swede asks if I do.

Surprisingly enough, no-one ever gets offended when derisive comments are spewn out about "Finns" - of course not. What an absurd idea  :)

Well, things have changed, but especially concerning the media (ie the news) the obvious thorn in the side of publicity is that -generally speaking- it's only the bad apples, the "problem cases" who get the publicity. And unfortunately, the opinions and prejudices of the masses are very much affected by that - even if many individuals know better. Not a good thing, but that's the way it unfortunately goes. The honest, ordinary folks who may not be anything "special" (sports stars, celebrities, what have you) but just people rarely if ever make the headlines, or to be more precise, they won't even be mentioned in the ending credits.

Hmm.. For my part I know some of my comments have not been so nice, but the truth is Finland and the Finns have a special place in my heart and Finland is my other home. I will be more careful in my future posts.

Whatever happened with liberte, fraternite & egalite - I get angry with people who think their "gilt arse" (nobility, fame, money, status, etc.) is a pretense to pass the queue.

nobody sends the @#$% beggers...we have the same problem here with them and i hate it because you @#$% work 8 hours per day, they just stay and beg and sometimes earn more money than you! that would drive anybody mad. there is only one solution for the finnish state..don't pity them, send them @#$% home! i don't think a begger harrased you in such a way you have to poison the forum spitting venom. they are just annoying.

btw...if anybody willing to cooperate..which is the most popular tabloid, magazine, newspaper in finland (the kind with @#$% senzational news) and one which is more about culture and stuff like that (no gossip and stunning headlines) ??
secondly...which one would you rather buy and why?
it is just a questionaire..the results will be confidential

sammy thank you for your opinion...we appreciate it

Well, for daily news theres numerous "morning papers" that are "serious". A lot of them regional, so depending on the city or region. Helsingin Sanomat, Hufvudstadsbladet (swedish language), Aamulehti, Savon Sanomat, Turun Sanomat, Ilkka, Lapin Kansa... then theres a bit party-oriented newspapers... The main evening papers are the two Ilta-rags; Ilta-Sanomat (a HS subsidiary a bit more serious) and then Iltalehti that is ripping scandals but not so often. The tabloidesque ones are the tv-programme weeklys like 7 päivää and oho... then tehres the monthly magazines, ranging from the serious Suomen Kuvalehti to the scandalous Hymy...

I dont usualy post in this type of thread.
I am too long in the tooth for confrontation..
But because I have been to Romania a few times and I have seen the way that most Romanians are desperately trying to pull their country up by its own boot straps to become a real contributor to the EU.
I make the following post:

They are trying to clean up their country in all aspects.
Political, Financial, etc etc...but the have had big mountain to climb from a very low level start point.

As the lady has stated ..They are embarassed by the "beggar" problem. They did not want them to come here ..they did not want them to be beggars anywhere. They want Romania to be able to provide social support for all of their subjects. But it will take a bit longer to achieve that objective.

Romania has some skills that the rest of the EU needs.
Nokia have spotted that and the move of production from Germany to Romania will surely bring some needed funds into the Romanian social services.

Many young Romanians that I have meet are hungry for the knowledge and education that we in Finland can give them. I am sure that they will not waste there time here like the so called students from many other places.
If the future leaders of Romanian Industry and politics get their masters degrees from Finnish universities

Also have any of you tried some of the latest Romanian wines?
Not expensive and very good value for money.

Last point..Go visit the country,..meet the people..then you might become qualified to comment.

If skills = cheap, then I agree about Nokia's move. Main reason for the move was lower wages, not some skills that germans didn't have. But that move _will_ be good thing for romanians, for a while, before Nokia moves its production to some cheaper place.
That is the thing I don't like about globalization: Big companies drive smaller companies out of business (or force them become big also or buy them out) and then move operations to cheapest place. And they can and will move in quite short cycles nowadays. Its cheaper to build new factory (with new handouts from some government) than upgrade existing.
