Actually, I found your example very useful and following it, I can find the information on items I want to ship. But I do have questions.

Several of the items I purchased are heavily discounted (example, a coat - down parka- I want to send originally was priced at 300 USD and sold for 159USD).

If I done this correctly, the VAT would 12%

6202 Women's or girls' overcoats, car coats, capes, cloaks, anoraks (including ski jackets), windcheaters, wind-jackets and similar articles, other than those of heading 6204

1. Would I include the invoice in the shipping box to show the actual price.

And my really clueless question,

2. Will the USD price be converted to Euro before the VAT is calculated?

VAT is always 22% (except food, books) it's non-negotiable. Typo? :)

Maybe i used the wrong word. When I looked in the Taric Code, it said 12% - so that is customs duty? Will the item be assessed both VAT and customs duty?

(value+customs+freight)= what the 22% VAT is counted from

(Value of "think" + Postage )* Tax * Vat = what you pay. so if taric code says 12% (i assume thats customs tax% (or is it duty, i dont know but you pay both)) then lets say 100e thing and 20e postage.
(100+20)*0,12 = aargh, tax 14,4 so you have to pay it then vat 134,4*1,22 = 163,97

Then you have to pick it up in nearest customs or arrange it with postman how its done +?e

They want cash or bank card in customs if pick up there yourself. 163,97-120=43,97=43,95e they want

And yes invoice in of course or customs pray great zeus for 4 hours trying to find out price...

And now if youre sending it to your doughter then note in "darling you forgot these from your bags, luv mom <3", rip all pricetags off, forget invoice etc and if possible wash once etc and just send. 8)
I dont recommend tax fraud, its bad and i cant promise it will go thru but... taxman is free game in here :D

A follow up: The box of (worn) clothes mailed to Tampere was picked up today. I filled out the customs form honestly (listing all contents) and in the comment section I stated that the contents were personal clothing items that didn't fit into baggage due to airline baggage limitations. The box was retrieved with no problems (wasn't asked to open).

I've now mail three boxes to my daughter, the last of which contained old clothes (t-shirts), and new things (winter boots, down parka), and misc items (a pair of scissors, bed sheets, and a stainless steel water canteen). The contents were valued at 380 USD + 61 USD postage and it was addressed to only one person. She wasn't asked to open the box and paid no duty or customs or VAT or whatever it is called. I filled in the customs form honestly but did add that they were personal items for an international student living in Tampere for 10 months).

So, we were lucky, yes, as no charges for any of the packages.

I know – your plan was brilliant, and I can remain guilt-free as there was no deception involved. 8)

At first we thought it was because the person at Posti (same one for first two boxes) was a little uncomfortable speaking English and just didn't want to bother. But this last time the clerk was quite fluent and very willing to talk. So it must have been your plan!

Thank you

Hi - missed this thread earlier so i know my response is a bit old, but i just wanted to let you know about our experiences with bringing items into Finland from a non EU country.

When we first moved here we shipped over 2 boxes of wine from Australia (only because they were from a tiny boutique winery and we knew we wouldn't be able to get it here). When it came through customs they charged us VAT (as we knew they would), but it was based on the value THEY placed on the wine. We included the receipt for the wine (around 200 euros), but they said it didn't matter what we had paid for it, it only mattered what they perceived the value to be. So just because you only pay a certain amount for an item, even if you can prove it with a receipt, the amount of VAT calculated is based on Finnish Customs valuation of your item regardless of what you paid for it.

We paid the equivalent of 200 euros for the wine when we bought it in Australia, but we ended up paying 380 euros in tax because Finnish Customs thought they were worth more than we paid. We're still smarting over it

Just for your information ...

Yes, but my understanding was that the tax was calculated not on what we paid, but what they deemed the wine was valued at - tax was calculated after valuation.
