I had a very similar problem when I called the Portuguese embassy even though I was actually born in and a citizen of Portugal before becoming an American citizen. Pain in my arse!

One realistic note on this is be prepared to have a challenge in finding work. Without the language skills, it is difficult. I am not going to say it is impossible, but it is difficult. Maximize your networking abilities with people you know or your soon-to-be wife knows. It is the best way to raise your chances. However, do not give up!
