FYI, home distilling of moonshine is still illegal. Also usage of grains is only allowed for making beer.

That’s pretty much what the expression “back in the old days” was supposed to hint to the discerning readers... (home distilling was made illegal in 1865, to be exact.)

Yeah, who needs things like... bread.

Blah, I were writing something about wine, kilju, mash and distilling , but got distracted and decided to delete most of my comment...

Penelope, have you tried http://www.svarfvars.fi/cat/ yet?

They have a reg route that runs right by house, so I'm gearing
up to buy some stuff from them in a couple of weeks.

No, I've never used them but they deliver in Olari on Wednesdays, midday (when I'm at work....)

Since we go through Karjaa most weekends I thought I might "drive-in" but I'm not sure if they have a bricks and mortar shop, possibly not. Anyway, we still have potatoes, leeks, onions and some fruit from the garden and plenty of meat. I get the rest from Prisma or Hakaniemi (I work there on Fridays which is quite convenient for the weekend). But I will run out of everything before summer comes. Some of the prices there look a bit steep, some look reasonable. The BIG bags of potatoes, carrots, onions etc. are a great idea.

I compare prices all the time..and I have found Prisma in Kirkkonummi to be cheapest and best in quality!!
We do all our shopping there and get our S bonus!!
For Fish and seafood, its the four season's fish near the intersection of Suintio on 51.
So if you are living West of Keha 3!! its worthwhile to shop in Prisma!! and in Four Season' Fish!!
They are already preparing for the competition from K..
and at least they have been really really clean eve if they are busy!!
For seeds and plants, theres a place called Kalle's in the burbs of Kirkkonummi close to downtown n he has very good quality seeds/summer veggies at very reasonable prices..

We don't have our stuff yet but sometimes we rent a car to get ahead on shopping.
So far this year I'm going to use over 200kg of flour, so I'm interested in getting
larger packages, instead of a gazillion 2kg ones. I used to use a lot of vinegar and
baking soda for my cleaning needs in the states because that reduced the poisons
kept in the household to a bare minimum (yes, we try to keep bad stuff high & away,
your kids may not be as interested to get into places mine have gotten to; why have
toxic stuff if there is safer alternative?). So where can a non business person buy
big quantities of flour, baking soda, vinegar and related things? I'm not a huge
costco-esque person but shopping ahead for a big family saves time. I'd like to
save my excitment for roller coasters instead of the fear I get from having to take
my kids shopping so frequently (every aisle pretty much has glass jars somewhere
on it, your kids may not be as Tiggerish as mine can be, even the one in the pram).

thx,

Amy
I wonder what the replies would have been if the name would have been mohamed Yusuf from Somalia!!
WTH do you use baking soda and vinegar for cleaning in the 21st century!!! ?
There's the stone as Penny mentioned..
and I mean..why all the trouble when there are safer alternatives to Vinegar and Baking soda which are also not safe if consumed in large quantities!!

sure I'm always ready to learn something useful, what simple safe chemicals are better?

In the US they don't add things to commercial cleaners to make them taste bad to toddlers but I've
never had a kid drink more than a sip of vinegar, it is it's own bad tasting stuff. And baking
soda isn't great to eat either. But vinegar does help my kids by, removing soap residue from
laundry (they are very soap sensitive), although by nature I use waaay less soap then products
suggest (I've been lucky to live in soft water areas for the most part, so less detergent and
soap is needed, even with the sensitive no perfume stuff). It has anti bacterial and anti fungal
qualities without hurting pipes, so I clean sinks, cutting boards and other places with it. And it
is just great at killing bad smells in stuff (although I've had a hard time getting rid of the smell
of vomit, and that is something I have to deal with from one kid's health issues every few
weeks). Baking soda is great for getting rid of tub scum without scratching, it cleans
the bits of scum from making chicken broth in my copper pots without scratching those
either, it is great for laundry as well, gets rids of various smell issues often, et cetera, et cetera...

WTH do you use baking soda and vinegar for cleaning in the 21st century!
That seems to be a trend. I have just recently gone through a manuscript of a book that will be published in Finland in a couple of months. It is a British book about "natural housekeeping". And it praises the virtues of vinegar and baking soda. I just remember thinking:"Why this in Finland? We don´t have industrial size packages, and baking soda is not cheap." Neither is vinegar in quantities that would be needed for cleaning. And it talks about stuff called "Epsom-salt" – do we even have that here? I don´t think so. I did not recommend the book but I guess it is coming despite of that.

How much vinegar do you need for cleaning? Surely it's not that much?

I do believe you!! Look for products with a White label for allergy sensitive items and they are there here more than anywhere I ve seen ( even in the US its difficult to find) Look for the products with the labels
http://www.finlayson.fi/.consumersafety_eng.0.html
( yhteistyossä allergia ja astmaliiton kansa
This association will tell you what products have been allergy and Astma tested :http://www.allergia.com/in_english

and
other sign is the "Confidence in textiles to reduce allergens ).
e.g. we use Minirisk or Erisan laundry powder for our laundry for kids. These are the best available today.
and we use Minirisk for softner too!!
LV is for bulk clothes and sheets.
If you dont expose kids to even small part of dust/dirt, they will be too sensitive that if they travel/go outside Finland, then they will be the most affected.
So let them get some immunity from normal household things.
Once you try the "stone" for cleaning and scrubbing, you ll not go back to baking soda.
Not trying to force things on you,....just giving you alternatives to things that are more normal these days even for allergic households..

so, how are commercial products more simple, are they less toxic or even cheaper*?
(I have a few of the laundry products you list, but seems to me buying fewer things reduces
the chance of my kids ingesting something dangerous, see earlier, and they do many jobs
instead of buying different things for everything, e.g. even clean the toilet). I will check
out that stone thing, but haven't gotten there yet. By the way, the irritants that bug
my kids tend to be in soap/detergent products (even the 'allergy' type products, which is
why I like to rinse with vinegar). For people with dust & mite problems, they only need
to wash at a certain temp to reduce that, most don't need a special cleaner. I don't use
softener, always seemed like baby food to me (products made for consumers to buy that
solve a problem most people don't have, but I did have one kid who had serious texture
issues and got baby food, still the others only had it for travel/shelf stable food).

* see link earlier for not too expensive baking soda, odds are a commerical avenue
is somewhere - cheaper & larger quantities but still, I'd buy from the source above if
nothing better shows up.

oh yeah, I also laugh when my sister trys to keep my kids from playing in the mud or is afraid of
the bee that flew into the house (no one is allergic). And I pretty much stick to cotton because I
have kids, and it is easier to wash (ok, knit items are best in wool, so sue my strong opinions,
I just wash those properly).

Baking soda can be got in larger quantities from Hakaniemi Ethnic stores.
As for vinegar, Lidl has apple vinegar of 1 or 1.5L.
