Fresh bread or bakeries in Finland?
Re: Fresh bread or bakeries in Finland?
Stockmanns do some really nice breads, although confusingly the "bakery" upstairs often has a poorer selection of basic breads than the deli downstairs (and you have to queue for ages behind snooty middle-aged women in fur hats being indecisive about cakes). Generally the variety of the bread selection here is better than in the UK for example, although it's a continuous source of mild irritation to me that it's almost impossible to get unsliced, wholemeal wheat bread anywhere. There's one you can get in some supermarkets, but it's always quite literally rock hard by the time I find it (usually 9.30pm). Maybe this is because it doesn't use the glutenised flours referred to but is still kept in open-ended paper bags? The extensive selection of various mixed wheat/rye breads with various seeds etc. amply makes up for this though. Actually, the same manufacturer that does the rock hard unsliced wholemeal also does a carrot bread, which is the nearest thing to a British style wholemeal I have found here. Wholemeal wheatflour is the main ingredient, and for some reason it's softer than their basic wholemeal (other manufacturers' carrot breads use white floor however).

The carrot bread was a staple when we lived in Helsinki. Nowadays we buy the heavier seed laden loaves, mainly because they are still good the next day for toast when we get them back home. Is it just me or does Stockmann Tapiola have a better selection than downtown?smoo wrote:Stockmanns do some really nice breads, although confusingly the "bakery" upstairs often has a poorer selection of basic breads than the deli downstairs (and you have to queue for ages behind snooty middle-aged women in fur hats being indecisive about cakes). Oh for a decent white bloomer or cottage loaf... still warm as you slice it, with a lovely hunk of tangy cheddar, a slice or two of tomato, a few salad leaves and a smearing of

If we classify the countries as bread country, potato country, pasta country, rice country, etc., I'm coming from a bread country and have always been dissatisfied with the bread selections in potato countries... In my opinion many breads in Finland (I don't know which category Finland falls) are surprisingly good in quality and taste...
