ATMs in the airports or major bank branches should be OK. Keep an eye out for suspicious things, of course, as you should anywhere.
Currency exchanges are ubiquitous in Moscow and St-Petersburg, and they don't normally rip you off like Forex does here. Avoid shady-looking outfits; also exchanges at tourist-ridden places like the airport or Nevsky prospekt are not so favorable.

I just changed currency at Forex before leaving Finland. Thanks to those who suggested that. I don't know how the rate compared to the rate available in Russia. I only needed a bit of cash in my pocket, not major expenses, so it didn't really matter. I did see an ATM at the airport in Ekaterinburg but I didn't need to use it.

Oh, Yekaterinburg!
Pleas tell me how was it. I might have to go there some time soon and I don't know what to expect...

I only flew into there and didn't see anything of the town, just the airport. My final destination was a 2.5 hour drive on from there.
The airport was small but OK. What else can I tell you?

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
