Do we need to register our Italian car?

Where to buy? Where can I find? How do I? Getting started.

No thats because then you have moved to Finland already. And Finnish residents cannot drive foreign registered cars. Besides which you cannot insure a foreign car in Finland.

If I understood well, you can have your unregistered car for up to 6 months in within a year. But, as far as I can read here, this is valid only for non residents.

I will register my girlfriend's car and post here the step-by-step procedure.

What if someone was to in the 5th month take the car to sweden for the weekend? Does your 6 months start again, so you dont have to get the car registered for the following 6 months?
Taking it out of Finland for a weekend does not reset the clock. IIRC - after 6 months you have to remove the car because you are only allowed to drive a car with foreign plates for 6 months in a 12 month period.

If you are going to be here for some time, you should give serious consideration to changing the registration to Finland. Not least because then you don't need to take it back to the UK for an MOT (been there, done that. I also mothballed my car in the UK for 6 months). How do you arrange renewal of UK insurance (standard UK fully comp only used to cover you for 45 days abroad) ... after that your cover will be 3rd party?

Also there are issues driving RHD cars like headlights, UK headlights illuminate to the left and ahead... which can blind oncoming traffic in Finland. Have you sorted your headlights?

And you surely know about winter tyres?

If you are going to make your car driveable in Finland, then registering it is not that expensive, and worthwhile so long as you don't have to pay !"#¤% of tax.

Perhaps, if the girlfriend has a second car, she could use it for the other 6 months in the year... 8)
