British Produce Stall At Turku Fish Market Thing
Re: British Produce Stall At Turku Fish Market Thing
I was a student at Loughborough (loooong time ago) and ever since I've been hooked on MM Pork Pies (drool). It's the first thing I eat when I go home (with coleslaw and watercress). Then it's crumpets for tea and fish and chips the day after!

I think your info is a decade out of date.jtammilehto wrote:If you like Cheddar - you can get Cathedral Extra Mature - in most places in Tallinn.
Great stuff!
Once again the Estonians are far ahead of the Finns.
When I moved here in 2000, cheddar was a bit hard to get hold, few places apart from Stockmann sold it.
Nowadays even the 2 local K-supermarkets I use in Pori stock Cathedral City, whilst the local S-Market has 2 kinds of Pilgrims Choice (mild and mature).
And the local Citymarket and Prisma both offer the above plus Dubliner.
Pori is hardly the most cosmopolitan town in Finland, but nowadays we even get 2 varieties of Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream... (both Häagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry's).
Though I still haven't seen Crunchy Nut Cornflakes.

We went food shopping with my folks a couple of weekends ago, and out of interest checked the price of Pilgrim's Choice in their local Morrisons, the 200g blocks of cheese were over £2.00. So about €2.50.mvgrogan wrote:yes, I can get the tiniest bit of cheddar - three varieties - for a stupidly high amount of money at CM if I really want... I've come to regard british cheddar as a luxury so it comes from UK with visitors and now from the market a few times a year!
In S-market I pay about €3.30 for the same block. 1/3 more expensive is hardly a "stupdily high amount" of money when it has to be transported over 1000 miles.
Here's the price checker for Tesco / Asda just enter Cheddar yourselves to see the UK price.

Due to the excitment of a stall selling a variety of cheddar cheese - I forgot to buy kalakukko...which was the reason why I was actually there. Looks like I won't be able to do that for another few months...shame.

I guess the one from Dorset is technically "West Country" (ie real Cheddar) but then again it depends what it says on the label. And anyway, it's a question of taste.Cory wrote:We went down this afternoon and put down 10 euros on cheddar.penelope wrote:Do you know where the Cheddar is from? Is it vacuum packed or do they cut it for you? Are they bringing fresh produce over by lorry every week?
A few manufacturers...the one's we chose Pembrokeshire Welsh extra mature, Isle of Bute mature Scottish and quite a few choices of flavoured The Cherry Tree from Dorset (never'd heard of this one before). All choices were packed already. Picked up a leaflet that states their preserves are available online at http://www.greatbritishproduce.com
How often is this market? Just in case I am in Turku.... My SO was there today but I forgot to ask him to go to the market

That certainly can be called gastronomic irony!Due to the excitment of a stall selling a variety of cheddar cheese - I forgot to buy kalakukko...which was the reason why I was actually there. Looks like I won't be able to do that for another few months...shame.

I can't be sure but I guess they might come & do the medievel market in July and the Herring market in September, too.. it seems to be the same organisers who do them all as it's generally the same stands each time.
Not checked their website yet but we could always invite them!

On cheddar... I don't know why I haven't ever checked in other towns before, but here in Kuopio we only seem to have cheddar that's already sliced up for you instead of in blocks, which I don't much like. Guess we're going to have to plan a trip to Turku
And for those craving kalakukko, our famous kalakukko store here can actually ship it to you (I should say fly it to you, really). At least to the Helsinkians
