If you intend to avoid deportation or gaining a residence by having a child, indeed one should, in one of these countries.my advise for immigrants is to migrate to countries that operate a different birth policy

Re: Status for new born in Finland
There isn't really an issue, as the child won't end up "stateless", and of course can apply for citizenship at 18 if been living in Finland, or if the parents apply for citizenship the child gets one too.

Yes. It seems to be fair accusation to throw around. You can also claim that it is part of your national costume and thus you have a valid reason to carry it.Mook wrote:it's worth a thought.... so when the police stop me for carrying it can I claim that it's racism??

You can also pull Gibson, moon the police and scream "FREEEDOOOOMMM!"
This will get you into trouble, granted, but it should also make wicked headlines for tabloid.

Re: Status for new born in Finland
I heard that the laws are changing in regard to citizenship. I will try to explain. My parents were both born in Finland and immigrated here to Canada when they were in there late 20's, they had me registered in the church in Finland even though I was born in Canada, under the age of 18 I was considered dual but to retain that I had from age 18 until age 22 ,to prove I had been there for 4 mths since age 12 (as a male my brother would have had to go to army) I had to show proof of a basic grasp of the language. I showed my parents current citizenship they have still not applied for citizenship here so they are still finns. and I had some brief work experience, that was the easiest way for me to retain my finnish citizenship.
At this time my first son has his finnish citizenship even though he was born in Canada, we got that by registering him in the church in Finland and also by making a declaration here with his father who is Canadian that we are who we say we are. It was a lengthy interview they did for us but well worth it in the end. At this time I am looking to apply for my second son as the rules are changing and it will not be as easy for my son to get his citizenship I am told. with the new laws he is not automatically considered a citizen, because I have my citizenship he will have to stay there for 4 yrs and live there. I can still move there and see that he does that before he is 18 but it will be a lengthy process, so at this time I am scrambling to get that done before the new law goes into effect sometime next year.
So now i am expecting my 3rd child, I expect to be here in Canada, but I might be in Finland (family buisness) when the baby is due I am not sure. If I am in Finland am I eligible for any benefits as I am a citizen and the baby would be born there? or would I have to be there for the 180 days prior? Also if I am in Canada would I be able to get this baby Finish citizenship also?
Does anyone else know about the new law that is going to happen?

Not for the initial maternity benefit as the 180 day limit applies.Rosilla wrote: So now i am expecting my 3rd child, I expect to be here in Canada, but I might be in Finland (family buisness) when the baby is due I am not sure. If you are a Finnish citizen, so will the baby be as well. The only cases where place of birth really has any relevance are the otherwise stateless babies and children born to unmarried Finnish men. Also if I am in Canada would I be able to get this baby Finish citizenship also?
The draft text in Finnish is online, but it is only a draft at this point:Does anyone else know about the new law that is going to happen?

Re: Status for new born in Finland
Citizenship doesn't come from the mother in Finland, it follows a patriarchal system. I (a haggis eater) gave birth to my child last August. The Finnish state sent me a letter telling me that he was not Finnish, he is Hungarian (father is goulyash eater). Hungary however has yet to recognise my child as Hungarian.
Re: Status for new born in Finland
okaaaaay... are there Finns who eat haggis? Eew.
