Sara, you were right about the PAYG-phone being locked. Phoned Orange and they will unlock it for £20. You can propably have it done for a tenner in some dodgy Tottenham Court Road mobile-shop but I can't be asked to drag my ass into town just for that so I'm going to be a lazy git and do it over the phone with Orange. At least it's done properly then...

Alright then, what are the latest and greatest offers on payg telephony? Is it worth buying a sim card for a week's holiday? I noticed dna are advertising one for 5.90 in rkioski, does that include credit? Can you buy credit for 5eur?

Family members recommended www.dnafinland.fi on our most recent visit. We never found a spot without coverage, even when we were way out in the countryside in the middle of the country with no banks and hardly any grocery stores or gas stations.

You can buy more minutes at R-kiosks (the most common newsstand/convenience kiosks across the country) and Otto-ATMs. At R-kiosk you just tell them your phone number, pay them, and in a minute or two a text message arrives telling you there is more money in the account. Wouldn't surprise me if others work the same way, but we had zero complaints about DNA.
As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

Thanks a lot, I'll pass that on. Unless the sim card in question has already been purchased.

This is a very old thread, so the things mentioned in the beginning are all outdated.

Just wanted to remind you that today (2009) there are major differences in the pre-paid mobile subscriptions. The DNA pre-paid subscription mentioned above has a call charge 16 c per minute. It's very high compared to e.g. Saunalahti or TeleFinland, which charge only 7 c per minute (0,069 euro to be exact).

Saunalahti starter package includes calling charge which is valid 3 months from start with no minimum monthly charge. The time extended when you add more money to to it. TeleFinland has a minimum charge 2,90 e per month, but if you use more than that it's no issue.

The easiest place to buy these starter packages is R-kioski - see special offers at http://www.r-kioski.fi/Prepaid_-tarjouksia.196.0.html .
