Hey,
I may be a tad late in responding but just came across this. I'm 24 and moved from Glasgow to Helsinki in August and I am pleased to report that the winter hasn't been nearly as difficult to adjust to as I was expecting. On the subject of footwear, I have a pair of Emu Outback boots that I bought a couple of winters ago and they have been absolutely brilliant here in the winter (although buy a size smaller than what you are and be sure to waterproof them first!) I am about as co-ordinated as a baby elephant and haven't fallen once
I bought a reasonably priced winter coat from Stockmann and it looks nice and is lovely and warm. As for the rest, I've pretty much been wearing what I would wear at home.... skirts and thick tights, warm leggings or skinny jeans (although I realise this sounds dangerously close to the Finnish uniform mentioned earlier....

). Woolly hat is a must or your wee ears will freeze! Clothes are a bit more expensive here and I do miss shopping in Glasgow for that reason... I'll probably pop back in the summer and fill a suitcase!!
Prepare to be VERY jealous of the girls here - they are experienced snow and ice walkers and while you and I are clumping around in big warm boots they will be strutting past you in spike heels looking very glamorous indeed. I think I need a few more winters before I can attempt it! For now, it's function over fashion until I can be certain I won't break my neck!
