My mom, whose parents both came to America about 1900, sang this same lullaby. According to her translation of her version of it, the rabbit runs through the woods with bells around its neck, bringing berries to the child (whose name is inserted into the song) and hiding the berries behind the door.
My mom is 89 years old and suffering from pretty bad Alzheimer's disease, but she sang this lullaby to my new daughter tonight, and explained the words to me. It was one of the clearest moments I've seen for her in some time.

The name of the song is Piu pau paukkaa. It took me quite some time to track this down. I hope it means as much to you as it does to me
