The pasturization process here in Finland is unique, its almost like a double pasturization. besides the clumping the biggest problem is that after a while of using this product you become lactose intolerant. The interesting part is a large percentage of people living in Finland have become lactose intolerant, the even more interesting part is some of these people while traveling abroad have found they can drink the foreign milk eat foreign ice cream with no problems its only after coming back here to Finland they have problems again.

To add to the mystery the Finnish Milk industry knows the pasteurization process is a problem but for some reason they dont want to change back to standard pasteurization even thou every year a larger and larger percentage of Finn are becoming intolerant to their milk products. Thats why you see almost all products are labeled made with lactose free milk.

Ive always suspected the Milk industry makes more money with the lactose free milk than regular milk thats why they dont change back to the same pateurization the rest of the world uses.

PS if you want longer lasting milk you can try the sterilized milks sold in all the shops with a shelf life of 2 months in room temperature(befor opening) it tastes OK, or another option is go buy estonian milk its not double pasteurized I think it has a better flavour and goes sour like the rest of worlds milk

Got any source info for that, as I've always understood it to be genetic. Not saying you're wrong, just interested to know :D

That. And Finns are not so lactose intolerant as other people (although a lot more than Scandinavians) and aren't used to sweet taste in milk.

I can cofirm this :ohno: I lived in France for 20 years and ate dairy products every day (cheese, cheese, cheese, cream fraîche, fromage frais, cheese, ice-cream, cheese) and never had any problems. Then after a few years living here I started to have problems which got worse and no doctor came up with any diagnosis other than "age", even after I had a gastroscopy. Then I read about the "issues" with milk in Finland and spoke to a few other foreigners and found that other people were having similar problems to me, sometimes much worse than mine. Then someone spoke to me about homogenisation and I also read some articles about it (medical publications) and decided to quit laktoositon milk and buy NON-homogenised milk instead. I bought Rainbow organic milk which was not homogenised but then they stopped selling it, so now I buy Valio Organic semi-skimmed 1.5l which is not homogenised either (Lidl's organic milk is, unfortunately, homogenised). My problems have practically disappeared but I've had to cut out ice-cream and I've really cut back drastically on the amount of cheese I eat.

There is also strong medical evidence that homogenised milk contributes to vascular disease (which I will no doubt inherit from my parents) so idrinking non-homogenised milk is a win-win as far as I'm concerned.

Organic, non-homogenised milk is roughly the same price as lactose-free "milk" products.

Tänks Upphew

Iskukuumennettu milk is foul. That's the UHT stuff in cartons, you can store it at ambient until it's opened. It's thoroughly disgusting. Certainly in the UK most people buy pasteurised milk rather than UHT.

Instead of coming up with weird conspiracy about mythic evil pasteurization process... Take into account the lovely "between the ears"-effect involving humans.
Lactose intolerance for some people is between their ears, not in their guts. And when abroad, they just "forget" that because they have all this interesting stuff around them.

My friend who has worked on an Olympic team as a specialist ,career in the health industry, lived in Finland for 3-4 said to me something about this Milk idea that is reported in this thread.
He studied out and if i remember correctly had the same conclusion as what you are suggesting.
The first year i spent here i only had Finnish friends , but now that i meet with and have a friendship with more and more foreigners over periods of years, they start talking about Food Allergy , this and that, i tell them "surely its just you personally", BUt, i know for sure when they and their kids and friends have problems and they talk about others having problems , then its not in their mind.
On the contrary, Finland or "Nordic transparency" is rather agreeable to me and many others who reside here , so as a comply-able resident , those piece of crap poisons they sell here is Yummy good for the whole family Until Further Notice.
And thats what everyone says, "eat what ever you like , but dont forget i told you so".

Same thing happened to me. 29 years of drinking and eating dairy products in Croatia(natural or store bought is pretty much the same unless you buy imported cheap !"#¤% from Lidl for example) then here a few weeks ago started having cramps after eating maitorahka or drinking lidl milk.
After changing to valio plus, and valio maitorahka things changed. Even kevytmaito from S market doesn't cause any problems with me.
One more thing i discovered, i tried to make cocoa on the stova, first tried to warm the milk, hard matter separated from water. Never seen it, ever.
Also i dont buy rasvaton !"#¤%, and lactose free milk is to sweet and raises insulin levels, high GI.
Hope this helps someone choose.
Valio plus is pretty expensive, 1.59, but has added protein and some other stuff and i think it's worth the money. 1.5 kevytmaito is 99 cents only a little more expensive than lidl but heck of a lot tastier.
