Higher up you said that you are coming here in September.
So why not fill in the forms when you get here? You can walk into eg
www.intofinland.fi offices in Helsinki and get them to help you. There are various other immigration helplines too in other municipalities.

Yes, I think I will wait until I move next week so I can seek some help as it's all a bit confusing. My partner never had this trouble when he was coming to the UK as a student!
Could I also apply under family ties as my partner and I aren't married yet (we're engaged) but have been living together for three years?
