It might also have something to do with the pitch of the speaker's voice. Hearing loss often hits the ability to discern certain frequencies harder than the others. People whose voice just naturally happens to fall in the affected frequency range may sound like they were mumbling or speaking in a particularly unclear way.

True. If it gets any worse, I might test a phone with a loop. But last time I took her to the cinema (with a loop) she took out her hearing aid half way through!
