Back in the days a friend of mine also had a camera repair business. The "worst" brand was Hasselblatt. Not because it was a bad camera but because it was used intensively under all circumstances. (and they were expensive enough to make repairs worthwhile) Just quoting repair statistics doesn't show the whole picture.

As for Canon vs. Nikon; professionals use both and often chance from one brand to the other. It all depends on the situation and needs. They're both good brands (and several other brands as well).

This may sound silly but when you say it has a problem in "vertical mode" what exactly are you shooting? If you are shooting things where there is low contrast difference you may have a problem focusing. Have you tried cleaning the contacts on both the lens and camera? If you google you will find instructions.

It could be a focus motor. If the lens is not expensive, just replace it. If it is, there is a repair shop opposite Kamppi (if you are in Uusima region) called Kamerahuolto. He's pretty good, I got a lens repaired there. And if it is not a telephoto (or depending on what you're shooting) manual focus is quite fine. I use a lot of manual focus lenses with mirror less bodies and it is quite fun.
