I'm having the same problem. I applied with Hoas months ago, and all I've gotten is an automated email saying that may application was received. The latest update on their website says they are still working on applications, but in the University of Helsinki newsletter I received today says that if we haven't heard from Hoas yet, it is unlikely we will get housing with them and we should consider applying elsewhere.
Hoas says they won't answer enquiries about application status, but should I email them anyway? I kinda need to know the status because I don't really want to be homeless or living out of an expensive hotel when I arrive in Finland in August.
Also, I'm having trouble with applying for housing through private companies like VVO because they require me to have a Finnish id number, which I don't have because I don't have my residence permit yet. Any companies that don't require this?

I sent Hoas an email asking if they could give a status estimate on my application. I need to know if I'll have a home when I arrive in Finland, after all, and it doesn't seem like asking for an update is asking too much in my opinion.
Their response is because they process so many applications, they are unable to give an estimate or status of my application.
That seems kinda rude and lazy to me. For crying out loud, even DMVs in America tell you where in line you are.
