School Shooting in Finland!
Did anybody read from yesterday´s HS the interview of that Boes type. He just goes on with his antics:
"Those who wrote to The Times belong to some secluded community."
He was surprised how many comments came from Brits living in Finland. "A typical Stockholm-syndrome. A man is a hostage of his Finnish wife and adopts her ideas."
According to Boyes there are some small nations at the fringes of Europe who don´t trust their own media, and because of that turn to quality newspapers like The Times. For example Hungary and Romania. And then they feel that foreign media treats them with arrogance, and that is why their response is emotional.

But how does he know which are the Brits living in Finland? Just because some of the posters were capable of writing coherent connected discourse without spelling mistakes or grammatical errors doesn't mean they're Brits.... in fact, they are probably all Finns.....
But yes, I think it is true some of the posters were Brits. And I think they were ranting because they I felt that the tone of his article was mocking in a "behind their backs" kind of way which some Finns - possibly not so fluent in the lingo - might not have picked up. He was rude and his articles were tasteless. Even though some of the points were valid.
Interesting discussion in Hesari yesterday about teaching (or not) philosophy in schools.

I'm curious that there might be some posters who believe the names of the victims should be published along with others who cry "foul" at the availability in Finland of personal tax information in the media.
Perhaps I'm the only one wondering if this isn't something of a paradox, and hoping they are not the same individuals.
Those with a voyeuristic streak have only to scrutinise the death-notices in the papers over the coming weeks to satisfy their needs.

Police in Germany has stopped a similar attack school for tomorrow planned by two 17-18yo students. The guns planned to use in the attack were available for most people in Germany. After police interview one of the students jumped in front of a tram and killed himself.
Let's see what that Brit reporter makes of this one... I thinking blaming Nazis etc...

Get in there...
The crossbow is a new twist. Maybe the man from Murdoch's rag could blame it on watching Conrad Phillips as William Tell.mCowboy wrote:http://www.hs.fi/ulkomaat/artikkeli/Sak ... 5231929123

The story has not been well covered here. Can anybody come up with a list of names of the dead and/or the wounded?EP wrote:Afternoon rags published the names and the headmistresses picture two days after the shooting.
Quite often, they will release the info selectively, censoring witnesses whose versions don't fit the official version.EP wrote: ???? So what were all the TV and newspaper interviews of students and teachers if they were not "eyewitness accounts"?
I recycle my paper quite efficiently, so the rag in question has been in the wastepaper collection for days by now. The names of the wounded were not published, they were just about all wounded from window glass when they jumped out through windows. If I remember right one had a gunshot wound in the leg.Can anybody come up with a list of names of the dead and/or the wounded?
What offical version? How could there be an "official version" half an hour later than the shooting stopped? The "officials" had just heard about it, the same time (or later) than the press and TV. I cannot fathom what are you trying to prove, starviego. That there is some sinister "official board" somewhere? And who are "they"? Reporters Without Borders place Finland at the "most free press in the world" position, whatever that means. But I know it certainly does not mean that there is some dictating official board that censors the press.Quite often, they will release the info selectively, censoring witnesses whose versions don't fit the official version.
Which is quite strange - seeing as people could tell them by their IRC-galleria names that same afternoon.EP wrote:I recycle my paper quite efficiently, so the rag in question has been in the wastepaper collection for days by now. And... their profiles were already gone early the next morning

Starviego: I'll swap you the names for those of the dead in the California wildfires. I'm assuming they are all in the public domain, but of course it may all have been a government plot by the shadowy Department of Wind, Fire & Brimstone.
Sometimes a nutjob shooting people is just a nutjob shooting people, and in some cultures the names of the victims of traffic accidents, apartment fires, murders, etc, are not public property and their families are not besieged by TV swat teams for weeping on-camera comments.
As to your Dallas reference, if there was a Grassy Knoll in Jokela, It will come out. When the snow melts, if not before.

Ah, balls, anyone got the Sunday paper still left? I'd like to make a verbal analysis of his private parts, dipped in curry... oh no, that was Gordon Ramsey.EP wrote:Did anybody read from yesterday´s HS the interview of that Boes type. He just goes on with his antics:

I read the paper in my local and they've wrapped their fish in it already.
Cheers, Hank W.

As EP says...
Mr Boyes agreed to an interview with the Hesa..
Here it is:::....English translation.

"The Translators notes" are very interesting.. where he points out that saying the opposite to what Boyes said aroused just as much Finnish Flax.
He reminds us of three examples.
Do check out the links at the end of the article..especialy..One abrupt online response to the article in The Times
Notice that Hank W manages to get in the last word, as usual...

People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.
In numerous other school shooting events--Columbine, Erfurt, Red Lake, Dawson College, VTech--the earliest news reports oftentimes refer to other suspects being arrested or being seen by witnesses. Though within a matter of hours the official, 'lone nut' version emerges. It would be interesting to have been a Finnish reader who followed the story locally from the very first media reports.EP wrote: What offical version?
