You can use the Verbix verb conjugator to conjugate any Finnish verb. Some people say that the conjugator is unreliable. It may be unreliable if you use it to conjugate English or Italian verbs but it is very reliable if you use it to conjugate FINNISH verbs!

I read that red part before, it sounded like a pretty weak grammatical rule. Otaniemi is part of Espoo so that works. I lived for a while in Ruskeasuo (brown swamp) in Hki... according to Posti, it's Ruskeasuolle. Katajanokka is in Hki, (juniper point?) so ... Katajanokalle or Katajanokaan?

I wonder then before Espoo grew, in the days when Otaniemi was only a sauna on the beach did Otaniemi take all./add./abl? Your big town / little town rule sounds harder to apply than the "next to water" idea where Hank pointed out

How the hell should you know Tampere or Imatra have rapids.

BTW don't shoot the messenger, I'm only passing on what I was told. Grammatical hearsay if you like. For grammar I usually turn to Karlson, it doesn't give anything in this sort of detail.

Now you have me wondering, what *do* we say in Espoo for Ämmässuo? Of course, no one goes there, so I don't know

But:

Kivenlahdessa, Lauttasaaressa, Ämmänsaaressa, Vuosaaressa

But:

Tattarisuolla, Ämmäntöyräällä, Tampinkoskella

The majority of the ones that I found though do take the "sisäisiä paikallissijoja" like Kivenlahti, etc.

There used to be a very fine, nice and simple distinction between the forms Oulussa ja Vantaalla. It's lost nowadays. The -ssa form is becoming moe and more a petrified expression signifying that one is completely "maalta", or from ...

Seriously, the problem of cases between -ssa and -lla is best left to those pure in thought and language. And as I'm probably agreed by everyone here, it's a question of nuances. Hank, as a native Canadian, has very good points there.

If you really want to learn by heart every one-man town in Finland, might I recommend the book "Alastarosta Ylistalolle" or the other way round. Captures the mind, like a registry of merchant ships of 1925-1926.

How the hell should you know Tampere or Imatra have rapids. Vantaa has rapids - logic works, but what about Oulu then? Eh?

Helsinki has rapids too. In Swedish it's Helsingfors. And what about Lohja? It's Lohjalle, not Lohjaan? Or Kerava? Or Enontekiö?

"Helsinge" is what Vantaa was called - "Helsinki Agrarian County". And its still "Vantaankoski", that is in Helsinki. Actually.
