Am I excempt from paying import Tax?

Post by ma » Tue May 30, 2006 8:18 am

Hello,

I am British and I have lived in Switzerland (non EU) uninterupted for over 2 years. I own a Swiss registered used Car, which I bought over a year ago.

I have read the documents on importing a car on Tulli.fi, but to be honest I still cannot be sure I'm excempt from paying tax.

Perhaps someone here can give me another pointer or contact.

I will declare the car as personal removal items.

The car is a Range Rover Discovery 3.9ES. It is 11 years old.

I will be moving to Finland in October 2006 permanently.

It's best to contact the Finnish Customs, because it does not matter what we say here - they will make the decision.

The places to contact are:

National Car Tax Advice Service, tel. +358 (0)20 391 101
National Customs Information Service, tel. +358 (0)20 391 100,
fax +358 (0)20 492 1812
address: PO Box 512, 00101 Helsinki
Customs/Enquiries about car taxation by e-mail: autohki@tulli.fi

The info leaflet on importation of removal goods including private vehicles is at http://www.tulli.fi/en/02_Publications/ ... 006_en.pdf

Edit: link updated.

Well, Switzerland probably has the cars adhering to the EU rules, what you'd need to get is an Eu CoC certificate. And if you plan on using summer/winter tires get your 2nd set of rims on the way unless you want to pay yourself silly. Theres a few Rover dealers here, so you can get parts etc. but the prices... erm.. you're coming from Switzerland, nevermind the prices ;)
Cheers, Hank W.

should be no probs bringing it in as a removals vehicle, so exempt from tax. As others say, check with customs.

IIRC, there are limitations on how soon you can sell it if it is brought in as a removals vehicle though. A couple of years if I remember right, so if you bring it in, you may be stuck with it. You could check this also.

There appears to be >10 Land Rover dealers in Finland
