They say that 50% of the Finns on this forum are idiots - surely that can't be true - there aren't that many of us!

gour·mand (gŏŏr-mänd', gŏŏr'mənd) Pronunciation Key
n.
1. A lover of good food.
2. A gluttonous eater. See Usage Note at gourmet.

[Middle English gourmant, glutton, from Old French gormant.]
A gourmand is a glutton (quantity over quality), not a lover of good food. That would be a gourmet (quality over quantity).
Not in my dico:

gourmand, gourmande
adjectif
(amateur) fond of good food (jamais épith); (glouton) greedy;
je ne suis pas gourmande I'm not that interested in food;
il est gourmand (de sucreries) he has a sweet tooth; (d'argent) grasping.

for me a gourmand is someone who is greedy but mostly for "good" food (but not always). He wouldn't eat quantity for the sake of it.

a glutton is un glouton

someone who is greedy is un goinfre or un goulu

and a gourmet is a gourmet (in French and in English)

Hi Penelope...

Here's where I got it:

American Heritage

...and this translation service suggests "gourmand" as the translation for the English word, "glutton" [select English-French translation; enter "glutton"...result s/b "gourmand"... :)

....and wiktionary..."gourmand"

gourmand (plural gourmands)

a person given to excess in the consumption of food and drink. A greedy or ravenous eater; a glutton. See gormand.
That great gourmand, fat Apicius - Ben Jonson
a person who appreciates good food. (Usage note: Some people feel this is an erroneous usage and should be gourmet for this sense.)
....
The French and English usages of this word are false friends. While the English word has evolved to emphasize the excesses of a gourmand, the French word has become more associated with refined tastes in food. See also gourmet which has considerable overlap with the present word.

And...some new Finnish words for me... :)

Adjectiivi:
1. herkutteleva....
2. ahne..."greedy"

Substantiivi:
1. herkkusuu..."refined mouth"... :)
2. syömäri...."big eater"

Gee...forgot all about the Newfies...but I think you have to count them in with the Micks...oops, sorry.. :) ...."esteemed personages of Irish ancestral origin"... :)

...and, of course, that reminds me of a Newfie joke...well, it's probably just one of those generic, "insult-the-nationality-of-your-choice" jokes...Hey, maybe it started out as an Estonian joke...but who cares:

The Pope had just finished a tour of Newfoundland and was taking a limousine to Gander airport. Having never driven a limo, he asked the chauffeur if he could drive for a while. Well, the chauffeur didn't have much of a choice, so he climbed into the back of the limo and the Pope took the wheel. The Pope hopped on the TCH... [Trans Canada Highway]...and started accelerating to see what the limo could do. He got up to about 95 miles per hour when he saw the flashing blue lights of a police car in his mirror. He pulled over and the officer came to his window.

Stunned, the officer said, "Just a moment, your Eminence, I need to call in to the station!" The officer radioed in and asked for the chief.

"I've got a REALLY important person pulled over and I need to know what to do."

"Who is it? The mayor?" asked the chief.

"No sir, even more important than that," replied the officer.

"Is it the Premier...
[head of the elected government at the provincial level]?"

"No sir. It's someone more important than the Premier."

"What the hell did you do, pull over the PM
[Prime Minister]?"

"No sir, it's not the PM," the officer replied.

"THEN WHO THE HELL IS IT?" screamed the chief.

"Well Sir, I don't exactly know," said the officer, "but he's got the Pope as his chauffeur!"

So, are there any new sausages that are worthy of a taste this year (besides my favorite ryynimakkara and mustamakkara)? I see a few new packages in the sausage isle that I hadn't seen last year.
