Aha! Rossipohja comes from trossbotten, thank you, but apparently has not yet made it into Finnish dictionaries. And, yes, as a guess, *tross* could mean truss, especially as there is a distance between the upper surface of the floor and the bottom surface of the floor, between which could be reinforced by trusses, and filled with insulation.

The “official”, recommended Finnish term for trossbotten is täytepohja. Rossipohja is more of a folksy loanword or builders’ slang.

(It doesn’t necessarily follow that the Swedish word tross would have to mean the same as the Finnish word täyte, though... while that’s a possibility, I guess. Someone with an etymological Swedish dictionary could help us out here...)

Yes, I found täytepohja in my dictionary, which means *double flooring*. And, täyte means *filling*, which could refer to a filling of insulation between the double flooring. Double flooring could be made with ordinary floor joists, but it is possible to use trusses, too, although trusses would be more difficult and more expensive to make, and so I suspect that rossi is only borrowed from the word tross.
