If you were Finnish, jen, your child would be Finnish (that's where the thing about getting it from
the mother comes from). (edit... if you aren't a Finn, but your spouse was, then that would be a
reason for your child to be a citizen, OR.. the kid would need to be stateless.... so the
letter you got says that your kid doesn't satisfy any reason for him to be a citizen. The rejection
doesn't prove the system is matriarchal or patriarchal).

Citizenship doesn't come from the mother in Finland, it follows a patriarchal system. I (a haggis eater) gave birth to my child last August. The Finnish state sent me a letter telling me that he was not Finnish, he is Hungarian (father is goulyash eater). Hungary however has yet to recognise my child as Hungarian.

Neither you nor the father are Finnish, so why should the kid be Finnish? And what has it to do with patriarchal?
